By now you must be well versed with TPM and PPM.
TPM is permanently replaced with PPM if necessary, normally the batteries are changed, BUT it is advisable to change the "probes" too (as different cardiologist have different opinions). So it's better have a new battery and new probes. Frequency and others are adjusted according to the specifications and you can go home.

TPM= Temporary Pace Maker, and Emergency device.
PPM= Permanent Pace Maker.
Hope answered your question.

The actual battery is located inside of the pacemaker box, so they will need to make a small incision above or below the current scar and access the old pacemaker box. they then disconnect the old box from the leads and attach the new box. they then suture up the subcut and skin layers to close. it shouldnt take as long as fitting the pacemaker as the leads all stay in their position in the heart. our docs can do a battery change in about 15mins! :-)
They DONOT stop your heart to see if the battery is working and there is no way of changing the battery on its own-they have to change the box.

They do battery checks through monitering . When the time comes to have the battery changed.........into the O.R. you go. It's not a bad as inserting one ( when they insert one they have to stop your heart to make sure the battery in working) as they just reopen the old incision and replace the battery, not the whole pacemaker. Battery has to be tested again though.

Missy Moo is correct. They do not replace the battery but the whole unit. Done under a local anaesthetic. They then administer a mild sedative to very lightly knock you out before firing it to check it is working.

They install a new unit. The unit is sealed and cannot be opened to change batteries.
