I'm gay, but I've never been on the "receiving end". Somehow I've developed anal warts. I've been to the doctor a couple of times and he's frozen them...but they keep coming back. It's really embarrassing and I'm not sure what to do now. I guess I'll go back and get them frozen again. My question is having not had anal sex...how is it possible to have caught it? Do they ever stop coming back? Is it possible it is something else and my doctor (who is kinda young and doesn't seem to be familiar with this particular issue) was wrong?

You don't have to be on the "receiving end" to get genital warts. Genital warts can affect the ENTIRE genital area which includes the anal area.

I've read, as much as 30 - 50% of people who have had genital warts and had them treated, end up developing them again, and have to treat them again. Some people are lucky and only get them once, have them treated, and never have them again.

If you are concerned it may be something else then get a second opinion. Good luck!

Genital warts are part of the Human Papilloma virus family, a branch that happens to like making warts in the genital region. Like all warts, they can be really tough to rid yourself of, and usually require multiple treatments. Genital warts in particular often return again. They are probably one of the most common STD's, and you can get them from anyone who carries the virus- even if you don't see warts somewhere on them. They are spread through skin to skin contact, and somewhere you made the contact necessary to catch the virus. Not usually a big deal in males, although I will agree they can be somewhat unsightly and sometimes can get painful if they are in the wrong spot entirely. The doctor can treat them with applications of several things designed to kill the wart, and there are some drugs that can help supress the virus if you are one of those folks who get multiples, repeated reappearances, or very large clusters or individual warts. It would be more concern if you were female and they were located on the cervix- and of course it would raise the risk of cervical cancer. But as you are male, and gay, that's not a concern here. You obviously wouldn't want to have unprotected sex with male or female partners, though- because you can share what you have with others who don't. Eventually your immune system will supress the virus and for the most part you should suffer fewer wart breakouts. But the virus does stay in your body forever, and warts can reappear unpredictably. As embarassing as you find them, I assure you they are more unsightly than harmful. They are just warts, for the most part- related to the one's you get on fingers and feet, and other parts of the body. Each virus varient just likes a particular part of the body better than others, that's all. And of course, folks are more embarassed about things in the genital region than on their fingers. But no need to be embarassed, really- viruses are really democratic infectors, and don't mind who they move in on. The warts are of course personal to you, but not to the doctor. For him, it's just a wart, and the part it lives on is rather immaterial.

My friend genital warts is EXTREMELY contagious you dont have to put a penis on the anus to get them all you would of had to do is graze a warty and touch your behind and poof you have them.

Eventually in time the virus will clean your system it could take up to 2 years keep getting them frozen off. Buildiun up your immune system is good too take vitamins excersise and such. Good luck and know its not the end of the world.
