OK how about calling your local florist or gift shop and ordering a gift basket, they have specialize baskets custom made to your specifications. For example, you could have cheese and crackers, cans of nuts, summer sausage and gourmet crackers, a coffee mug or travel mug or beer mugs and a six pack of a good quality beer. Champagne glasses and decent champagne, they can help you decide and they will put together a basket specifically for you and your price range. They have hundreds of choices, and it makes a great impression.

I'm still stuck on your "6:30 until 10:00" limit! Nevertheless, sounds like a nice time and he's offering to cook. You can certainly ask if he'd like you to bring anything and most likely he'll say "no". So, in that case, bake a batch of his favorite cookies or brownies (unless he's diabetic or on a diet) to take along. A bottle of wine is traditional, and if you two are underage or not into booze, try a nice bottle of sparkling cider.

Ask him. If he says bring whatever you want, make it simple on yourself and order a crudites platter from fresh direct, or go to whole foods for a platter. How about some beautiful flowers and a well package bottle of wine. Or you could always bring dessert, thats a good choice, but really ask.

Yes you should take something, never go to someones house for dinner or a party empty handed. I'm not sure of your age but if your of age take a nice bottle of wine. If not Take dessert, maybe a cake or a pie or cheesecake, yeah a cheesecake would be good. Who doesn't love cheesecake. Have fun.

Well why ask me, you should ask him!
Just say "Do you need me to bring anything?" He will either say yes or no.
Traditionally one person cooks and the other either brings the desert or the wine... but if you don't know what he is making it is sort of hard to bring something that goes with the rest of the meal.
So just ask him.

You need to find out what he's fixing. Maybe you could bring rolls. Or drinks. Or dessert. Or popcorn.
