A duck facing the winter,then they produce more down ,
These are the small fuzzy feathers beneath the normal ones close to the body which are super insulating ,and these feathers are in great demand for bed covers,quilts,winter jackets and pillows.
Some ducks also produce more than others like the northern species

Almost every bird, including ducks, bear down feathers. They are small but have a porportionally large surface area to trap heat that would otherwise be lost from the body, sort of like when we wear jackets in the winter. People will often wear down jackets because they are exteremely light for the warmth they provide. One catch however, you need to keep them from getting wet, otherwise they lose much of thier insulating qualities. That is whay birds have these feathers under waterproofing feathers.

Well, all ducks bear down, but you'll get more down per bird from larger breeds, such as Pekins. There is not, to my knowledge, a breed or hybrid developed specifically for down production, yet.

it is a young duck...that still has its baby down feathers (the soft fluffy ones that baby birds have until they mature) - & thats what they put into quilts & pillows etc. ...simple answer to your question is feathers of a young duck!! sorry...i waffle!!
