When a cow is sent in to be slaughtered for meat, do they throw the skin away or ship that skin to be processed as leather?

If they do send the skin to be processed as leather (as they can't process leather in the same complex where they slaughter the cow for meat, obviously), how do they do it to prevent it from spoiling?

Pretty much. If you eat meat never, ever eat sausages they are lips eyes etc! I don't know how they send the skin to be cured as leather but the places that treat leather are called tanneries. For hygeine purposes they probably transport it in cold storage. You could ask at a tannery what exactly this involves.

The WHOLE COW is used. Every single bit -- inside and out -- even the internal organs (that's what's in pet food). Even the bones are sent to be processed into bone meal.
If you go to the HistoryChannel website, and look for that "Modern Marvels" episode, entitled "Leather", you'll see exactly what happens to the hides as soon as they're stripped off the carcass.

The whole cow is used except the faeces, brain and spinal cord.

Yes, and thoroughly dried, sometimes dusted with dessicants. Don't go to an abatoir for the fun of it. The first thing they do is secure a chain to a back leg and jerk the live beast up about 10 feet -- all 1/2 ton of it -- on the moving conveyance. It's a fun place. Not. (This was a long time ago -- maybe they've cleaned up their act.) Oh, yeah, an artery is cut and the blood collected and dried. Its a good plant food among other things.

It is to a company's benefit to sell all of the cow. How much is used obviously depends on who slaughters it: a commercial concern to the rancher for food.

I have a ranch with cows. Even in small operations, almost all of the cow is used.

I do know for a fact that the hide IS sent to a tannery, but to be honest with you, I have no idea how they keep it from turning. Perhaps they freeze it? Or maybe they drop them in vats of preservatives (similar to embalming fluid) for transport. Excellent question!
