Herpes Simplex Virus

Herpes viruses are a BIG family, so don't go jumping to conclusions or judgments before you figure out what's going on (if your friend wants you to know -- it is her health info, and she has the right to confidentiality).

HSV comes in two types (relevant ot this discussion, anyway). HSV-1 traditionally causes cold sores, while HSV-2 traditionally causes genital herpes. I say "traditionally" because the practice of unsafe oral sex is leading to infections on opposite sites (e.g., HSV-1 on the genitals).

About 60% of all adults have HSV-1, and about 20% of adults have HSV-2. Some have both strains. it's really common.

There is no cure of herpes, but it can be manged with cyclovir drugs. Not all people with herpes (oral or genital) will display symptoms. And most importantly, people who may have herpes are not "dirty" or otherwise. They're just people. We are not the ones to judge.
