I'm planning my dd's 3 yr old party, w/ the theme of Strawberry Shortcake. It's going to be a noon-2 party, so I wasn't planning to have a lot of food. However, I would like to serve something other than sweets. The girls will all be 4 and younger... any suggestions?

Maybe stick with the strawberry theme and have shortcake (I so love the answer about having them make their own!). If you don't want to have shortcake because perhaps you are already having birthday cake, what about the classic hotdogs and macaroni and cheese? The macaroni and cheese you can buy in microwavable cups (just fill with water up to the line inside). That way, each child could have his or her own cup and clean up would be as simple as tossing it in the recycle bin or trash! With the hours you are having your party, I do think a lunch type food is a given. Chicken nuggets are always a hit with four year olds and they are simple; while you are doing one thing, they can be in the oven baking right along with some oven fries. Kids love to dunk things in ketchup! What about sandwiches with meat and cheese or even peanut butter and jelly cut with cookie cutters in the shapes of strawberrys, hats (doesn't Strawberry Shortcake always wear a big sun hat?), flowers, or even just hearts? You could even go as far as cutting the cheese in different shapes and arranging them on a platter of some type then do the same with the bread and meat. Have fruit in small enough pieces where they can dunk it in fruit dip (powdered sugar and cream cheese ... it's yummy!) I'd try to keep things simple for both your sake and sanity along with the kids' sake!

Good luck with the party! I am sure it will be a success no matter what you chose to serve! Have fun with it and keep us posted!

I think you could have a cheese, crackers, and pepperoni platter. Or if you are looking for a more healthy option, a fruit and veggies with dip tray would be excellent. I think that considering the theme is Strawberry shortcake, you could make a bunch of little desserts with strawberries in them - strawberry shortcake, regular strawberries with whipped cream or chocolate dipping sauce, strawberry pie, etc.

Mini-Sandwiches, can be filled with cream cheese and strawberry jam. The kids and adults will love these.
Fruit Bowl. Buy a watermelon and scoop out the fruit in balls. Fill the empyt watermelon shell with little balls of melon and berries. Will look very pretty and be tasty.
Serve strawberries and pretzel sticks dipped in chocolate.
A vegetable tray is always a nice touch. Again, it can be more pickles, olives, etc along with peppers, carrots, cucumbers. Put out a little dip.
Cheese and crackers platter.
Pita bread with dips, i.e. Hummus, Pesto spread, etc.
Given that your party is all around the kids, make sure that the snacks you put out for the adults are easy for you to prepare, put out, and for the guests to help themselves to during the event.

Universal 4 year old food - pizza and/or hotdogs with perhaps some sort of chips on the side. Fruit juice instead of soda and definitely have milk on hand for the birthday cake. Have fun!

Finger foods. Kids that age tend to still eat with their fingers. Try cutting up some fruit.. melons, berries etc and arranging them to make a smiley face or something else that will appeal to the young ones. Do the same with veggies. You could even par boil baby carrots so they are softer and easier for them to eat. Also you could make mini wraps, turkey, bologna, etc .. wrap it with cheese and lettuce and then cut into bite size pieces. Its healthy and if you display it just right the kids will be drawn to it. :) Have fun!

I like the idea about the veggie and fruit platter. Little kids like things crunchy, soo they would enjoy having celery and carrot sticks that they could dip into different dressings. Apple slices are good when dipped into peanut butter. Also, chicken tenders are a good finger food for kids. Alot of people like to give kids hot dogs, and that's a bad idea...although kids love hot dogs, and i do too...lol...small children can choke on them though, soo be mindful. and good luck!!!

Finger sandwiches

Get bread that is not really fresh. (easier to cut the crust off)

make sandwich and cut in half in triangles then again making tiny triangles.

ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, chicken and cheese,
pimento cheese, etc.

cut up fruits and veggies.

My 8 year old doesn't eat very much at a time.

Especially when she is excited about doing something else.

Her sister's friend is over today and at breakfast she ate about half of what she would normally eat.

I think that girls really like some fruits like grapes and you can serve some grape juice and fruit punch. I'm not quit sure if little girls are messy with chips but give it a shot! Good luck and tell her i said happy B-day

The small short cake you buy in the store and a lot of strawberry's and whip cream. let them build there own, give them a good place to make a mess with easy clean up, and let them have fun.
If they are like my daughters friend, you don't want to give them to many sweets.
