You should eat, then cake and then go for presents. Trust me, you'll have a lot more fun when the kid's stomaches are full instead of whining because they are hungry. Plus the child can open presents while you get the other kids cake and they are eating it. It might prevent from the other little ones from tearing into the birthday kid's presents.

I would definitely do cake last! If you are having finger foods or something with an easy clean-up (which I highly recommend) do that first then let the little birthday bundle have at the cake! I live in Indiana and we have a store called Meijer here. They have this awesome idea where if you get your child's first birthday cake there, they will give you one "messy" cake (usually a small cake) along with the one you chose for your guests. The messy cake is for the one year old to tear in to! That way, the guests don't have to eat cake that has had little fingers digging through it, and you don't have to interrupt the little one while they are having the time of their life so you can cut the rest of the cake for the guests. Even if you don't have a store that provides something like this, the idea is still there for the taking! Let the guest of honor devour the "messy" cake while the older family members take pictures and help with any cutting and passing out of the guest cake. Then you can clean up and let the unwrapping begin! You really don't want to have icing and crumbs strung out all over your home while the presents are being unwrapped. A lot of people might only want to stay for the cake with a first birthday because that is what a lot look forward to; those little fingers digging in the cake, that first big bite with no spoon or fork! If your guests have children of their own, the children might get a bit bored or even rowdy if they have to sit there and watch an infant unwrap gifts. Perhaps you could offer those who want to stay and watch your sunshine unwrap gifts are more than welcome to do so but if they would rather pass, there will be no hard feelings. But let them know it will take place after a quick rinse - off and a fresh diaper because cake can make its way into the darndest of places!

I was just at a birthday party for a 1 year old. They had a bunch of games and things. They also set out a buffet style table and the kids and parents got to make themselves a plate while enjoying games and socializing. The cake came after and then gifts at the very end. I think if it was up to me I would have set a timeframe for everything. Maybe a half hour to an hour for games and food, and then 20-30min for cake and then opening gifts. Plus there were too many people there. I would keep it kind of on the small side.

Presents, than cake. I think it is better because you can get the presents over with. With one year olds, most likely after cake they will go wild! Make sure you have a game to play afterwards.

If you have lots of other kids, eat first - then presents - then cake. This way, they sit through the presents because they're
waiting for cake.

I usually have huge parties (80+ ppl) for my daughter (7 years
old now) because we have huge families, so she was getting
lots of gifts. For the last few years, we've requested no gifts.
There's always a few anyway, but they wait until after the party, when it's usually Gramma and a few Aunts/Uncles that stick around.

For my daughter's birthday, cake then presents. Honestly, i never went to a birthday or any sort of party that they opened the presents first.

At my daughters party last month this is how we did it and it worked out great.
Guests arrive
Eat
Games
Cake
Presents

I did the cake before the presents because I knew my daughter would be cranky and ready for her nap towards the end and I wanted cute cake pictures. Its not like they really open the gifts anyway, thats moms job, and i fun one it is!!!

According to my family, usually, my mom gave my LiL brother, 1 year old brother food and we eat together. Turkey would be nice. Chicken, Roasted Chicken, maybe. Then when we're finished and finally all stuffed... my family gave him presents. Then, for the desserts, cake or puddings. Mango Pudding would be nice for the young birthdays.

Sounds fun, though. May I join the birthday party? LoL!!
Just Kidding!! ^_~

Hace a nice birthday party!!

In my family the one year old gets a cake put in front of them and we just let them go at it. Makes a mess but its quite entertaining. If you wanted to do that you might want to do cake last.
