My friend has had high blood pressure for a while, and its risen to 185/107. Admittedly she didn't make the advised lifestyle changes, and is now worried sick that she's gonna have a stroke or worse. Is that likely?
And how will she know if she's had one?
Thanks.

Have her go to the doctor immediately! It is not just stroke and heart attack one worries about, as high BP can also affect the kidneys. Signs of stroke are, but are not limited to confusion, facial droop, slurred speech, unsteady gait and noted weakness on one side or the other. Good luck!

Blood pressure measurements don't count for anything if you've been walking around. Ideally, you should be sitting down for at least 5 minutes or so. Blood pressure also can vary during the day, so it's best to get measurements from similar times during the day. No caffeine in the morning either. These measurements should be repeated on a few separate occasions. Some people get "white coat hypertension" when they go to the doctor's office because they are nervous. Probably blood pressure medicines wouldn't kill you. But you don't necessarily need blood pressure medicines if your blood pressure is only high while active. When doctors study the effects of high blood pressure, they study the effects of people who are diagnosed with it as described above. You are probably at no higher cardiac risk from your blood pressure.

At the age of 21 pregnant with my son, I had a stroke. I had no idea this is what was happening to me. All I had was a sever head ache.....so all of those symptoms vary to each individual. 20 years later I had an accident in Fl. and had to have Brain Surgery as, the aneurysm I had at 21, had sprouted yet another one. Yes I did and do have High Blood Pressure....it is hereditary. Your friend needs to go on some sort of meds. Going through all I have gone through I found that many people have had strokes and never knew, as some are very small and indistinctive.

The bottom number of 107 is the indicator of how long this has been going on. She is getting into accelerate hypertension, the good news is until you're dead, you can treat high blood pressure. With medications, diet changes, and exercise, her pressure could be normal within months. Dont give up!

high blood pressure can be a silent killer as you dont get any real symptons. The bottom figure is the important one. The top one is generally 100 plus your age. The bottom one should be no more than 85. I have high blood pressure and this is what I am told. Strokes and heart disease are possible and she would know. Is her condition not being monitored by a doctor ? She must not forget any prescribed medication.

Worrying will only make it higher. She needs to take her medecine and learn how to control her anxiety and stress levels. Eating the right food helps and giving up smoking also helps and short walks are better than non at all.

You can live with high blood pressure if you follow a few rules.

Know when to relax and get rid of stress related problems.

Is it being treated at all? Untreated hypertension wreaks havoc on your body and it doesn't usually show up until one is older. She needs to at least be on some meds even if she doesn't eat right or exercise.
Tell her 30% of first heart attacks are fatal - perhaps that will get her attention.

She may not know--she might be too far gone for her brain to be functioning--someone will find her. I would advise her to see her doctor--there are lots of medicines for high bp. Lots of people take medicine for this.
