The incubation period from the time of sexual contact with an infected partner to the apparition of the warts varies from 3 weeks to 4 months. These warts are caused by the HPV, and are extremelly contagious, meaning that you can get them from a single sexual encounter. If you're under 27 y/o, ask your doctor to give you the vaccine Gardasil, that may protect you from the strains of the virus you haven't been already exposed. Pap smears will only detect the virus if the virus is active (which is why the pap smear comes back abnormal).

It's possible you have the virus, but it's not active at the moment. It's also possible you don't have the virus (right now anyway). HPV is VERY common and if you stay with this guy you have a greater chance of contracting the virus.

I have personally had HPV for 6+ years. For the last two years my pap smears have been normal (they were all abnormal the years before). About a year and 1/2 ago I developed genital warts from my HPV. So, even though my pap smears are normal I still have HPV and I was still able to develop genital warts.

If I were you I would make sure you see your doctor or OBGYN every year for a pap smear. If they are ever abnormal then you should be getting a pap smear done every 3 - 4 months. I would also look into getting the HPV vaccine which is called Gardasil. It protects women from 4 different kinds of HPV - two are known to cause about 90% of genital wart cases and the other two are known to cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases. Talk to your doctor more about this. Good luck!

You should definitely not have sex with this guy any more. He could have anything. And if you are just dating him and aren't married, how many girls do you suppose he has been poking to get those warts?
