Are sensor lights (as I have posted a picture here: http://weblog.xanga.com/yahooanswerspicture/621537678/sensor-lights-and-energy-efficiency.html ) energy efficient. I mean they are on 'standby' all day until it is dark enough for them to start sensing. Does it use a lot of power all day long being on or would it be worth while turning them off at the switch during the day?

No the power used while the actual light is off is very small if any certainly turning them off at daylight could save some power.
They beat the heck out of streetlights and security lighting that stays on all night irregardless. So you wouldnt have need to beat yourself if you forgot to turn them off

The amount energy to power the sensor that turns the lights on and off is very very small. Most of those sensors typically only require 50mA at 2-3volts. (which would be 0.15watts which is a high estimate) The amount of energy saved by turning them off is tiny compared to how much the actual lights use. If you are that concerned maybe you should consider removing one of the lights.
