STD experts, please help! My cousin called me last night in tears. She's had herpes on her lip for years, but had a bad outbreak where they spread to the base of her nose. She made appt with her doctor but was seen by the nurse practitioner. The nurse practitioner absolutely terrorized her by telling her if she gets herpes inside her nostrils they spread straight to her brain, she will get brain damage, "go crazy" and die. She also told her if she touches the open sore and then inside her ear, same thing the herpes will go straight to her brain. I know if you touch an open sore and then your eye it can cause blindness. I've never heard about herpes of the brain. I don't know if she was telling her all this to scare her into being more meticulous with cleansing? I told her to make another appt to talk to her doctor, not the nurse practitioner, which she will do Monday. Any truth/info on herpes of the brain?

Well the nurse is absolutly true and herpes is the number one cause of aseptic encephalitis or non bacterial brain swelling. It kills a huge number of people every year and may even be the primary presentation of this. Your friend should thank that NP for giving her some very sound advice and showing her the gravity of these HSV sores. I think the nurse could have had some more tact but unfortunatly this is very true. If you don't beleive me go to www.pathguy.com and click on nervous tissue. Control+F then type in HSV encephalitis and you will see it and get plenty of info. Infact there was a DR. G. on discovery health 2 nights ago about this exact thing! This Herpes encephalopathy is so important that it even make the national boards step I every year! I hope the nurse gave her acyclovir!

In January –February 1997, Ball MJ, Kaye JA and Steiner I, published a report entitled –“Neocortical temporal lobe sclerosis masquerading as Alzheimer dementia: "Does herpes virus encephalopathy protect against Alzheimer's disease?”. This stated that " 'Semi-quantitative neuropathological analysis and morphometric evaluations of the brains of 5 elderly people (63-85 years old) dying following a 5-27-year history of dementia reveal that, despite exhaustive survey of all major brain regions, 4 of these cases show virtually no histopathological lesions of Alzheimer's disease. Instead their CNS manifests a severe, bilateral, neuronal depletion, and astrogliosis afflicting the lateral temporal neocortex, highly compatible with a previous herpetic viral encephalitis' ". It is known that herpes affects the brain.

Herpes can be fatal for an adult if it causes encephalitis or meningitis. This is EXTREMELY rare though.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by viral infections. It can also sometimes be caused by bacterial infections. If the brain swells too much it can push against the skull which can cause brain damage and death.

Definitely have your cousin see her doctor so he/she can give your cousin some better information about it. Take care!

DON'T believe the idiot and take it easy, she is just a practitioner. okay?
things would't be so serious as she told, but it still need u to draw enough attention about it, because the symptons are somewhat similar with some serious diseases...
people on positivesingles.com often asked me some similar questions, too.
in all, u need to go to a professional dr. for further ensuring, and take some tests if necessary!
