I have had a cold since beginning of september. Everytime I exhale deeply, I sound very wheezy and a bit phlegmy, and I'm tired alot, and I've lost a bit of weight. My appetite has gone even though I still eat like usual and I can't go to the toilet properly... as in flicking from constipation to the other... I also get a bit of a gurling in my back when I breathe, just behind my right lung. What is that?

i agree with ameliav's answer but why dont people give their age and some medical history if they expect reasonable advice.
colds are not lingering first off. colds that linger are no longer colds but have given over to something else or weakened your defenses enough so that a lung infection or sinus infection has replaced it. now you say youve lost weight which may go along with infection but how do i not know that maybe your on a diet or exercise program in which case your weight loss is coincindental with your illness. if the weight loss is part of the illness then it can be associated with an infection. a dramatic weight loss and bad eating habits can also account for fatique, constipation, or even diarrhea. throw some undue stress in there and it only adds to the picture. the gurgling in the back can be a sign of phlegm in that area, or other fluid like product.

so getting to the issue: 1. the prolonged illness should be investigated although it may only turn out to be nothing much
2. the audible wheezing gurgling on expiration should be accounted for as that is not normal breathing but again is not in itself indicative of any specific illness. 3. loss of weight and fatique is a factor to consider so it can be associated or not with the diagnosis. at the least an xray and basic blood work would likely rule out a lot of "things"

the real problem here is why do people on this site give all these half *** symptoms and ask if they should go to a doctor. hell no, go to a psychiatrist. even the best MD in the world cant treat you by answering your question. so the only reason i can deduce that people even query this site and then believe all the drivel that follows is, they think they can save some money by avoiding the doc. i'll tell you the truth, many a doctor has told me that most people who believe they are sick, when given time they get better on their own without any treatment.
there are really three reasons to go to a doctor:
1. get early treatment so simple/routine (non life threatening) illnesses will resolve quickly and i agree with that. 2. intervene early before a truly overwhelming attack on the body gets the upper hand. this is where decent doctors excel. 3. get appropriate medical treatment for a real existing properly diagnosed illness.

ok, ive done my rush limberger thing. now go to the doctor so you can get better.

People think they have a cold when it's asthma or pleurisy. Pleurisy can hold on for months at a time and, get worse, even to collapsing a lung.
The gurgling sounds a lot like asthma. This is something that young people now days are coming up with a lot. You see a lot of people sucking on inhalers a lot. With our air and polution it could be anything. You could have an allergy also. Molds at this time of year also.

First see your primary physician, he'll send you for X-Rays, then maybe a lung specialist.

Do get scared but have your Doctor test you for Cystic Fibrosis. It's a lung disease in which you have all the symptoms to. Look it up on the Internet and see if the symptoms fit you and take it from there. Good luck.
