The Pinnacle? Oh c'mon. It's a nice day hike, but far from the best. I don't think there us even camping spot near there...a legal one anyway. Joanna, really, you need to get away from PA once.
Anyway...the BEST is debatable. If you want to park your car once and not have to move it for a week the two places I would go would be the High-Peaks of the Adirondacks or The White Mountains of New Hampshire. Both have long trail systems that access great peaks with surpurb views. Both are a lot better than random spots along the Appalachian Trail (the AT does go right through the White Mountains though.)
You will most likely encounter others in these areas. Unfortunately there are few places in the NE that do not attract other hikers and campers. However, even in the 'Dacks or Whites you can find some solitude if you are willing to hike for it and are willing to give up the better views and bigger peaks.
Most places in Maine are remote, but access there is limited to a few places that everyone goes to. Northeast Vermont can also offer some great places to camp, hiking there is a little more harder to do. There are trails, just not great ones. Most good hiking and camping in Vermont is along the central spine of the Green Mountains. Only a few places there have any sort of loop trail sysyem. The longest loop network is in the Manchester/Stratton area. Unlike the Whites and 'Dacks, the Greens have few peaks above tree-line, so views are not always the best.
There are alot of OK places in NJ, and lower NY...but none are GREAT! Central and Western PA have some better places than Eastern PA. But again, nothing in PA beats the opportunities in the Adirondacks or New Hampshire.
If you don't mind hopping in the car to move campsites, then you can add Vermont to the list along with the Adirondacks and the Whites.

most of the places mentioned are all on the Appalacian trail so you should check it out. if you want to just camp and then do day hikes versus backpacking part of the AT go to one of the big parks. You can find campgrounds near the trail and go hike it during the day and return to camp at night.
