my girl friend needed to stay at the hospital for about a week after she had a severe asthma attack....while everytime she needed to get hospitalized during an attack was only for maximum one day.
why did she need to stay there this time?

The physicians may have been running some tests that were giving the results they wanted to see improved or where listening to her lungs and didnt like what they heard. What did they say when she asked? Im sure there was a reason because in this day and age they are generally tossing people out the door

It could be due to the frequency of her attacks? You state she spends one day maximum now suddenly a week, but this attack was severe? They may want to try and figure out why this attack was so severe, as in the present medication is not working for her to have a such a severe attack. There has to be a reason why this was such a severe attack, or why she is having such severe attacks, so they might have now decided to try and find the missing link.

well, there could be numerous reasons including but not limited to: possible heart trouble caused by extreme respiratory distress, wanting to monitor if she has had a lot of problems with severe attacks recently, or even wanted to watch her because of possible reactions/side effects to medication they may have given her. You should really talk to her to find out what happened.
