I think it is because people don't think for themselves enough. What we learn in school, watch on TV, read in books/magazines, learn from other people is not always true. We are taught stereotypes, we are brainwashed into thinking certain ways, and are taught to be close minded. If we were taught to think more outside of the box, to use more logic, common sense, more imagination, and more oppen mindednesss. Then this would be less of a problem.
Many people forget what protein, iron, calcium realy are.
Iron is a metal, and calcium is a mineral they can both be found in abundance in the ground or soil, water, rocks that plants will absorbe through their roots. Protein comes from plants before it comes from anywhere else, animals can also make their own amino acids (the building blocks of protein). All plants, fungi etc. Amino acid construction consists of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen with some containing sulfur.
Plants are needed to transfer the essential nutriants the herbivores and omnivores. Carnivores and omnivores use herbivores and plants themselves to gather needed nutriants.
All nutriants that humans require can easily be found in plant sources, even dogs can live full healthy lives on a vegan diet.

No questions are stupid. People ask questions because they want to know the answers or they just don't know how to find them. Put yourself in their shoes would ya? Everybody has the right to ask, stupid or not. If you don't think you can give a constuctive answer, then skip the question. Oh by the way, "eat what the cow eats" is not exactly a brilliant statement. I think what Smithy was asking is if you would eat grass like cows do since you're the one who's posing that statement. Yes beans has protein but not many people know that even though you and I would think that it is a common knowledge.

All questions are legit, hands down!
The problem is, why would someone ask a question that seems really stupid.
A: They're too lazy or don't know how to find the answer on their own.
B: Mom and dad didn't do a good job.
C: The fact that they are asking a question tells you they're not really dumb people. They want info that they can't get from their parents, school or friends.
I agree, it's too bad that some people have to ask total strangers for help. But at least they're reaching out and trying.
Not everyone had the luxury of smart parents. It's when you hear the LACK of stupid questions that you have to worry.
I see people reaching out for some kinda knowledge and that's never a wrong thing to do.........Just be glad that you obviously had someone there for you when you needed help. Not all do!
I'm trying to make myself more tolerant and your question helped me out. It really is too bad that there is that many dumb questions, I agree. But it's not them, it just shows the lack of good info that Mom and Dad should have provided, might not have been there.

I also love the one about "how will I replace the vitamins I'm not getting anymore?" At least they're remotely on the right track when they know meat has protein and iron, but aside from a little B, where are they getting the idea that meat was their primary source of vitamins? I'm surprised they don't all have scurvy!

Because there are alot of stupid people who don't take the time to do research. Common sense should tell people that if you are thinking about making a life style change, then you should talk to your doctor or at least read up on the benefits and risk before doing so, people are just lazy.

IDK either.
You have to understand, these are people who buy into the whole FDA Food Pyramid Garbage that's been crammed down their throats and those of their parents. They're completely ignorant of any kind of nutritional information, except when it comes to criticizing or making fun of those of us who reject BigMac culture; then they know everything.
They don't see a connection between billions of dollars made by the meat industries, weight loss industries, and insurance companies. Let them wander around in a clowd of ignorance. They'll die first, anyway.

Simmer down.
The only stupid question is the unasked one.
Some may consider "Why are there so many stupid questions?" a stupid question.

if u dont wanna discourage ppl from becoming vegetarians then u should just answer there questions instead of calling them stupid. theres lots of ppl who might not know how to get protien from beans and nuts and its something they need to be told if they dont want to wind up w/health probs.
