If you use nero you can do it this way.

Open nero smart start... go to the video section, click create my own dvd.

Then simply locate the AVI files you wish to convert to DVD. In the past i have got away with putting on 2 films on one dvd, i havent tried 3. Please note this will take about 2 or 3 hours to complete!

You are trying to make a playable dvd which you will need a DVDR instead of a CDR. You can either convert all the avi files into mpeg which will play on some DVD players or you can you use a software to convert them into DVD format. The program I use is VSOconverter.

A: Yes and No. The answers that have been given so far are valid but given that you want to fit more than one 700mb (film) onto a DVD to watch none of the answers below will work. The following will work but only as long as your DVD player does - let me explain.
If your file avi file is a DivX avi file (for exapmple) and your DVD player can play DivX avi files, then all you need to do is record the avi to a DVD as data and stick it in the DVD player and it will play the file. As long as your DVD understands the video codec and the audio codec you will have no problem. Download GSpot from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and analise your files to see what the video and audio has been encoded with and as long as your DVD player understands them then all you need to do is to burn them to disc as data.
With regards to bin and cue files they can be explained as follows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bin_cue#.BIN.2F.CUE but basically long story short you need to download and install something like Daemon Tools http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/announcements.php and load it onto the virtual drive. You'll either have to figure that bit out yourself or do some research though.

You need to convert them into DVD/MPEG format first, AVI is a compressing technology, so unless the DVD Player has the capability, it wont do it, and not many standard player will have this,
