Okay Hawai'i, while beautiful, does invoke island fever quickly. Ohahu is only so large and you can traverse the whole thing in like, what, three hours? But Japan is MUCH different, for one, you get all four seasons on the mainland. Tokyo and Yokohama are very close by to all the Kanto Plain bases( if you end up on Okinawa.. well, that's Hawai;i all over again.. only more Tai-funs.
as for OPTEMPO, I do not know what that's like for anybody but 7Th Fleet, and yes, they are gone a lot.. more than any other Fleet in service, actually.

I have no idea but, if you are stationed in Japan, or anywhere for that matter, my advice would be to do and see as much as possible. Don't isolate yourself.
My ex husband was in the Army and we were stationed in Germany. We never went anywhere or did anything. I only stayed for a year before I couldn't stand it anymore and had to come home. That was 17 years ago and to this very day I regret not seeing and doing everything that I possibly could. It's a once in a lifetime chance. When will you ever have the chance to live somewhere like Japan again? Sadly, I will most likely never make it back to Germany. Take advantage of it. Get the most out of it.

Japan is one of the better places outside of the US.
Germany and South Korea are probably the only ones better, but it depends on which branch you're in. (I'm saying Air Force, Navy and Army)
If there was an invasion on a country in that area staged by China and its allies, South Korea or Taiwan would take all the heat, and Japan would become a fortress country.
Also, there's some good food here, which is important because it makes up for the cramped conditions.
My dad was briefly stationed here for about a year during the Cold War before being moved back to the states, and later to Germany.

Japan is fabulous...we lived there for 7 years in Misawa, a small base in Northern Japan. That area is more rural, but as long as you are willing to get off base and be active, there is so much to do. We were involved with a Japanese American friendship club that let us make so many Japanese friends. Aomori is the closest large city..a port city...with some wonderful shopping, temples and incredable hotbaths. We spent more time off base than on and got to really see some gorgeous things. We also spent vactaion time in Tokyo (several bases down that way as well). I loved Tokyo for the excitiment and ongoing activitiy. I didn't like the air quality so much or the humidity in the summer. Northern Japan gets a fair amount of snow, so if you have been missing it and/or love to ski, you would be in heavan. The only thing I would comment on is that AC is not standard in most Japanses buildings or houses and in Northern Japan, you won't even find it in military housing. Weather wise it isn't so bad...summer heat is really only bad for about three weeks in august...but people with severe pollen allergies may find it tough.

we were stationed in misawa japan for 3 1/2 years and there were several tdy's but my husband never went...i talked to his CO and in a discussion informed him that my husband disclosed all information to me when he leaves...and i relate it to the wives...personally...he never went on one TDY the entire time...every time his name was on the top of the list it was put at the bottom :) Japan isn't bad and there is a lot to do and see there if you arent afraid to get out...the bases are built up pretty well but i joined 4 book clubs while there and read a lot...in the north (misawa) it snows 8 months out of the year and snows a lot...so be prepared if you are stationed there...in okinawa it is like hawaii most of the time and beautiful...not to say there isn't beauty in the north it is just different...if you need more info feel free to email me...

Spent the last 4 years of my career stationed in Japan. Lived off base the entire time. The housing allowance and COLA are great. My wife worked as an English teacher part time. We paid our living expenses out of her salary. (She was paid in yen) and banked most of my pay. We put away $100,000.00 over those 4 years. Go for it !!

Japan is an absolutely fantastic place to be stationed. You'll probably go to Camp Zama.
