If the answer is tradition, then it must be tradition to be dishonest. Show, ritual, to please the family... all dishonest. What a way to start a marriage.

People who don't believe in God and still get married in His church and ask for His presence there is a contradiction of terms. Yet it can happen and there were some cases that made it possible. One possibility may be that the couple are not both unbelievers, meaning one believes in God at least. The unbeliever may only want to go with the wishes of the other as a token of sincerity and love for the other.
That, in my opinion, is how to resolve a contradiction and that is to draw a distinction.

Religion has nothing to do with marriage. Marriage is a LEGAL and therefore CIVIL contract. Try getting married in a church without the legal papwerwork, you can't. Now get married by a justice of the peace and don't make mention of god or any other magic sky-pixie, no problem at all. See the difference?

Few reasons;
* Every little girl wants a traditional white wedding in a church
* Family pressure
* Tradition
and probably my favourite....
* Hedging their bets: Not 100% sure if God is there, but just in case, could you spinkle us with a little bit of divine feel-good-factor please. Call it a bit of an insurance policy.

For them, it's just a nice little ritual for the fam.
Kinda like the baptism of babies. The baptisms in the time of Jesus was done by choice as an outward proclamation of their faith. These babies don't know what's going on and it hasn't proved to ensure the salvation of any kid, but the parents often do it by reason of tradition.

because they just want to look good infront of others to keep the peace especially infront of their wifes or husbands family, and its become a tradition, so really alot of people have forgotten what it really means to get married in a church

well, I didn't have a church wedding, mine was outdoors. My fiancees fam wanted a Catholic Church wedding, but I couldn't stomach it. We had a minister do it, that was the compromise. There was still praying involved but I didn't do that part. I don't know why anyone would want a church wedding.

Good question why?
because they want blessings wherever they can.
they know god does exist but they don't want to leave their wicked ways
