I am living in the UK on a US student visa, but I want to be able to work here after I graduate without needing a permit. Ideally, I want EU status without having to go to Italy. An EU passport would be nice as well.

It may be nice but no. Italy goes via jus sanguinus (right of blood) for citizenship. You'd need an Italian parent to qualify. Also, if you do not qualify for Italian citizenship then you can't get an Italian passport.

The only way you could have gotten citizenship via birth in Italy is if your parents were unable to pass down their citizenship to you. Since you're parents are American I think they would have filed for a American Born Abroad Birth Certificate after you were born and that would have given you American Citizenship which would have nullified any opportunity for you fo fall under Italian Citizenship via birth.

Were you born on a military base? Or were your parents in Italy because of the military? If so, you have no claim to duel citizenship....probably you are just an American citizen either way to be honest, but that will depend on the laws in Italy. Call the Italian embassy and inquire about it.

I have a son with an American man. I'm Japanese by the way. My son was born in Japan, and he obtains 2 nationalities:Japanese and American. Anyway, he got his dual citizenship 'cause mom is Japanese and dad is an American basis. Not because he was born in Japan. I have heard anyone who was born in US can obtain US citizenship, but, it doesn't really apply to any other countries. For example, some American lady gives birth to her child in Japan, they are not eligible to have Japanese citizenship... So, it is case by case. Also, when he reaches to age of 18, he needs to pick one nationality. Age 18 is the limit for any dual citizenship to pick the nationality by the way.

I'm not really sure how old you are, but, you may need to contact officials in your area to see if you are qualified to obtain dual citizenship based on your birth place...

Birth in Italy does NOT confer automatic citizenship. One or both of your parents or, under certain circumstances, your grandparents must have been Italian citizens at the time of your birth in order for you to have acquired Italian citizenship.
