My 3 year old cousin loves gum, but he always swallows it. Is this really bad for him? What can happen to him if he keeps swallowing it? How can I get him to chew it but not swallow it?

Don't give him anymore gum. A 3 year doesn't need gum anyhow. It won't hurt him by swallowing it but he could choke to death on it.

actually, swallowed gum probably only lasts in the stomach for a few weeks at the most because the "digestive juices" are so highly acidic. I don't know that repeated swallowing of gum is harmful, but it's best to be careful. Perhaps you should refrain from giving him gum until he is ready to chew it without swallowing it afterwards.

I've never heard of anything bad happening to anyone who swallows gum, but I don't think it would be to good if he is swallowing it all the time. I wouldn't give him gum, you should wait until he is a bit older (5ish) and by then he should hopefully be aware enough to not swallow the gum.

have you ever tried not giving him gum considering he swallows it. how about ,'you get no more desirable gum because you swallow it and that i don't understand if it truly is healthful for you. mommy gained't furnish you with something it truly is not threat-free for you. perchance we are able to attempt gum once you're six.'

We used to have this problem with my 3y/o. However, at one point, it got so bad when my Mom kept giving her gum that she became constipated. It became very difficult for her to have a BM and when she did, it was literally dark, foul smelling gum. I made sure my Mom stopped giving her gum. To replace gum, we started calling starbursts 'gum'. So in the rare instances that we get her 'gum', it's really starbursts.

heck i'm 31yrs old and i still can't resist the urge to swallow gum. My 3.5yr old swallows gum all the time and he has never had any problem from it and it does not stay in your gut for 7yrs it is digested by your stomach acids and then you poop it out.
Its really not a big deal.

It does NOT stay in the stomach for 7 years. It goes through without causing any problems. So he swallows it, big deal.
