While the term rapture is recently coined, there really is no question that jesus was an apocalyptic jew who preached the end of times.
jesus stated many times that the end would come before his apostles all "left the earth".
If jesus were here today I see him on the street corner with an end of times sandwich board and a bell.
Edit-SDW good to see you back.

the word "rapture" is not in the bible. but here are some scriptures to study and see if it bears any relevance
1 Thess 4:15-18
1 john 3:2
acts 1:9-11
most people believe in the "rapture" because they have been taught that the same as the word "trinity" is not in the bible but was born 325 years later. that doesn't make it biblical. though i believe that the catching away of the saints is more biblical

The word "Rapture" is not in the Bible. It is a term coined later (could have been in AD 325 during the Council of Nicea, but I recall it was actually before) to describe a pre-Tribulation removal of the Christians.
Not all Christians believe in the Rapture (I personally think the 'End Times' started at Jesus' Ascension) or that there is a specific seven-year 'Tribulation' as a literal interpretation of Revelation would suggest.

The word "rapture" doesn't appear in the Bible. It came from a Greek translation of the verses of Scripture that refer to the text that says "we shall be changed in a moment, in a twinkling of an eye..." Why, you ask? Because the Greek word "rapare" in which "rapture" has it's etymological root means "To snatch away or seize." It's a word used to describe the fact that we're instantaneously transformed into glorified bodies and "snatched/raptured" out of here!

This is actually quite an involved answer to post.
First, where the word comes from:
"Rapture", when used in eschatological terms, is an English word used in place of the Latin word raeptius; taken from the Vulgate, which in turn is a translation of the Koine Greek word harpazo, which is found in the Greek New Testament manuscripts of 1 Thessalonians 4:17.
In many modern English translations of the Bible, harpazo is translated; "caught up", or "taken away".
"Harpazo" \har-pad'-zo\ Koine Greek; "forcibly snatched away", "taken for oneself".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapture
The Theory of the Pre Tribulation Rapture was taught to me. It comes as an understanding that the 'church' is the 'body of Christ' (metaphorically). And that the body of Christ will only suffer the wrath of God once. And it did when Jesus died on the cross.
The metaphorical 'body of Christ' which is the church was typified with Moses striking a rock from which water flowed:
Numbers 20:11
Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
The rock that Moses struck is a 'type of Christ'. One of many types of Christ found in the Old Testament. But Moses was punished for that. God told him that because he stuck the rock twice, he would not enter the Promised Land.
So the Great Tribulation is called God's Wrath, poured out on the Earth. It is because of these connections that there are many Christians, myself included, who believe that God will take us out of the world before He pours His wrath out on this Earth.
I could go into much more, but that's the gist of it.

The Book of the Prophet Left Behind.
Just kidding. The New Testament sometimes talks of being "caught up in the clouds" with the returning Son of Man and all the rest of the saints. These refer to the prophecy in Daniel that he beheld coming in the clouds one like a son of Man, the Ancient of Days.
"The Rapture" is one way of interpreting these and similar passages. It is not the only one.

Hello, sorry you have to experiance some of the rude answers. Here is some scriptures that do refer to the raputure the taking away of the church etc. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-5:11. There actually quite a few. If you wanted to I could send you more via e-mail. God Bless you.
"16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words.
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
1Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
4But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

There are several teachings amongst the church fathers that Christ would return for His church and catch them away to be with Him. The Church is referred to as the Bride of Christ and if you look at the tradition of the Jewish wedding in Bible times you will get a better insight.
The Jewish wedding took the following steps.
1.The retubah - the betrothal (born again)
2. Payment of Purchase Price of Bride(Calvary)
3. Bride set apart (sanctified)
4. Bridegroom departs for fathers house(Ascension)
5. Builds addition to his fathers house for them to live in(Heaven)
6. Return unexpectedly, usually at night for his bride(Harpazo)
7. Carries his bride away to his fathers house
8. 7 day marriage feast ensues.(marriage feast of the lamb)
Read 1 Thess chapters 4 and 5
This is the pattern of the return of Christ for His Bride (harpazo) following the tradition of the ancient Jewish wedding tradition.
Many examples of Gods saints escaping judgment are in the Bible. God takes His saints out before Judgment.
1. Enoch (type of Church) translated (raptured) before the
flood.
2. Rahab and her family escape when Jericho attacked by Israelites.
3. Lot had to be taken out of Sodom and Gomorrah before the angels could judge it,
There are numerous others but this is enough to illustrate the pattern that God takes His people out before He judges.
It will happen again and soon.

Wiggensir gave you an excellent answer and if you are too lazy to go through Rev. a second time (I have taught it vs by vs twice to an adult study group and find it fascinating and have studied it twice more myself and still learning so much)-but if you are too lazy-then why should someone be expected to do your work for you.
Would you make your children go through the tortures that the unsaved will experience during the tribulation, especially the 2nd 3 and 1/2 years. Surely we can trust God would not have us, born again in the redemptive blood of Jesus endure such tortures because God loves us with an everlasting love.. The word Rapture is not in the bible but is used to describe that event when Jesus will appear in the clouds (not on earth at this time) and the dead believers will arise first and then those alive at that time will next be caught up in heaven with Him.
There is so much to relate to you but I believe you have a closed mind and would not accept the truth if it were engraved on your forehead.
I pray you open you mind to the word of God and let yourself be lead by His Holy Spirit whose "job" it is to reveal all truths to you, including a Saviour who'se very mercy would not have us endure the horrors of hell that will befall man in that terrible time under the antichrist. (anti-means opposite of... so he is the evil personification of our holy Lord) he is a tool of satan, the father of lies who is even now deluding people to disbelieve any of the word of God. Pray for discernment and an open mind.
I didn't want Jesus running my life for 40 years but when I was close to suicide, and I thank Him for all He lalowed to bring me to that-then I cried out to Him and asked His forgiveness and beliedved He shed His blood for me and lives again and so shallw e for that promise iis in His word.
Remember the two thieves on the cross, one denied Him,the other belived on Him and Jesus told Him "this day thou shalt be with me in paradise." Now the choice is in your hands. God does not send us to hell, we make the choice and there are only 2-choose the lord or you are choosing the devil FOR ALL ETERNITY>
