You are imagining it.
Susan B. Anthony
Madalyn Murray O’Hair (founder of American Atheists, "The Most Hated Woman in America"), Ellen Johnson (current president).
Carol Faulkenberry, author of "An Uppity Old Atheist Woman's Dictionary"
Annie Laurie Gaylor, Freedom from Religion Foundation spokeswoman.
Margaret Sanger (founder of the American Birth Control League, which later became Planned Parenthood)
Most evangelists, Preachers, Pastors, Imams, Rabbis, the Pope, the prophets, etc. are male, what does that say? Women are the activists. They are hardly less "vocal" than their male counterparts - if anything - they are more so.

I'm sure you're imagining this. I'm guessing your assumption is limited to people you personally know. Try getting in contact with more atheists and I'm sure your ratios will change.
Eh..come on, people. While I might agree that men are simply more outspoken about their atheism, as men are always encouraged more than women to do what they want by society, I don't buy that crap about women being more religious because they're "more emotional and spiritual" and men are "more rational". If that were true, men wouldn't be (and have been) running all the religions, would they now?
Starjumper, maybe the reason you only see little old women in church every Sunday is because the old men are already dead. Women do live longer than men on average. And btw, atheism isn't a set of beliefs, just one.

I never thought of this before. I assumed it was pretty equal. I guess I can see a guy being more rebellious and less religious, in a situation where both a guy and girl were brought up religious. When I think of high-profile atheists, they are mostly men, but then same with high-profile religious people so I guess men are just high-profile. LOL. I'm an atheist girl :-)

From my personal observation, I have concluded that women are in fact more religious (or more in touch with their spiritual needs) than men. I live in Greece, and every Sunday each church is cram packed with little old women in black. It is hard to find even one man among them. Not that these men are atheists, but they just aren't concerned about that sort of thing. As for atheism itself, I would say the majority of them are rebelling against the corruption seen in many religions today and accepting another set of beliefs based on what scientists tell them is fact.

It does seem to me like more men are atheists than women. But that's just been my personal experience. And the truth is, outside of YA, there is only 1 person in my life who is 100% an atheist. I'm sure I know others but he's the only one who is outspoken about it.

Any body think of this. Women might be more religious because they are the ones who give birth not the men. Maybe them creating life makes them a little more attuned to the religious and spiritual aspects of things.

I don't think there are any hard numbers on this. Does anyone here have any kind of poll numbers...provided by a NEUTRAL organization?

female. lesbian. agnostic/atheist.
In that order. My observations tend to be neutral. I'm in the UK, there are so many atheists that the gender thing doesn't register on my religio-gender-meter!
EDIT:
Hmmm, automatically earns a thumb down for who I am.
Play nice, people.

I would imagine that more women would be religious because they are more emotional by nature than men
I am a female atheist, however.
