maybe he has hip dysplasia, my golden retriever has that and most large dogs do, some things you can do is get him a warm bed to lay on and try to massage his back legs for about 20 minutes. Its good to make sure that he's lying on something warm because usually for dogs with hip dysplasia the pain gets worse and for really bad cases they cant even get up. This can also happen to puppies too. What happens is that the soft tissues that surrounds the puppy or young dog's joint starts to develop abnormally as they start to grow. When they develop hip dysplasia their joint capsules and ligaments start to stretch which makes the dogs hip unstable, So therefore the head of the femur isnt securely inside of the socket and their bones move apart instead of together. Some things that might help your dog is to not over feed him. And also do not over exercise him, its good to take them on a very short walk every day but do not over exert him. So some symptoms of hip dysplasia is when the dog walks with a gait or a liimp, another is that they have difficulty getting up or lying down especially after they wake up. Or if you can tell if they have pain in their hips or if they have a "bunny hop" when they run. We noticed that my golden retriever was limping when she was a puppy and we took her in and the vet thought that something was wrong with her front paw, but come to find out a little later that she had hip dysplasia. Dont be alarmed because this is kind of common in large breeds of dogs, but just do somethings that can help, like getting a warm bed. :] but still get him checked out with a vet

I'm a vet - 17 years experience. I go along with Loz. Panosteitis is a likely cause - it's an inflammation of one or more long bones for no good reason and that can resolve on its own but anti-inflammatories are usually given. Tends to happen in young, growing large breed dogs.
Radiographs will confirm.
Another possibility is muscles under attack by immune system - immune mediated myositis. Biopsy will confirm.
Also polyarthritis - a sometimes shifting inflammation of joints.
There can be weird conditions like oversupplementing with calcium causing extra bone growth on the outside of the bone; that's quite painful too.

As everybody has advised, get your pup to a vet. Soon. All the best.

What you are describing with alternating leg lameness sounds like Panosteitis. Hip dysplasia does not present with this kind of lameness. You should probably get him on an adult food with lower protein than puppy food. Rest is the the best for this. Pano can be more painful than HD. Bufferin can be prescribed, I have never seen it really help with Pano. The only pain killer that I have seen work some with Pano is Zubrin. x-rays can reveal pano if the pano has been there , you will be able to see some changes in the long bones. Take him to the vet anyway. It does sound like Pano.

You need to see a vet, my dear. On here you may get a wealth of opinions, but only a vet can examine your dog and tell you the FACTS.
I'm not even sure I understand your question.
20kgs is a little heavy for a 20 week old lab......is is on a diet suitable for large breed puppies? Such diets will help support STEADY growth and development of bones and muscles (as well as other benefits)
You have to go to the vet - but you'll be thinking about castrating soon, I'm sure, so you maybe already have an appointment booked.

Which legs is he limping on? If it is only his hind legs, hip dysplasia would be something to consider. Luxating patellas and Calve-Legg-Perthes tend to be conditions of small-breed dogs; they'd be much further down the list in a labrador.

Panosteitis is certainly a strong possibility. Another (though less likely) possibility is hypertrophic osteodystrophy, which is also a bone disease of young, larger breed dogs. Really, it's impossible for any of us to say. All of these conditions can be differentiated on x-ray, and all require some form of treatment, even if it only involves pain medication. Best to see your vet :o)

No one here is going to be able to give you a real diagnosis, not even a vet, as they would need to evaluate your dog.

See a vet.

Well the vet visit is certainly called for. Others have mentioned multiple possiblilities and well the horror that everyone in my area thinks first of when shifting lameness is mentioned is Lyme....

Look, why are you asking non-qulified people to answer serious questions like this? Take your dog to a vet and get him checked out. S/he should be able to fix your dog right.
