If you quote the old testament to christians they always say "that was b4 christ "etc. so why bother with the old testament at all if they think it was null and void after christ?

Please dont assume its something I know nothing about -girlie-as I considered myself born again up until I was about 20.The more I saw hypocrisy and selective sampling from the bible in various denominations and the "free church" and thought about the logic of the world around us, the less sense the bible made.I have read the bible several times from cover to cover and cannot convince myself that there is any evidence that it was truly gods word.

Good question.

But then again, the bible was made up of bits and pieces stolen from other peoples religion, so...

Edit: I see that some people CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!

I've never said that & study both.

Christ was the fulfillment of the law. Without knowing the particulars of what you were saved from how can you be truly grateful? If I took a bullet you never saw coming & just told you I saved you would it matter? For that matter would you even believe it?

The old testament is still very relevant. You not only see how great men of God were still chosen despite their sins & mistakes, you also get a clearer picture of the end times than Revelations, you come to know God's attributes & reasonings, etc.

Ever tried a Kosher diet? It's one of the healthiest diets there is despite fats. Many of the things forbidden we now know aren't good for you.

The law was given to show us our sin. That's why when Jesus went to hell for 3 days to preach the gospel many that were dead rose with Him. You can't be justifiably held accountable for an act you don't know to be wrong.

But the sum of the law is this love God & man. If you love someone you won't lie to them, murder, steal, etc. That's the only way some one could say it doesn't matter before Christ is like partaking of a certain holy day, rituals, etc.

The whole Bible is God's word. Like a teacher he starts you off at the beginning & builds on your knowledge. I can do Algebra but not unless I fully understand my numbers first. I don't need the reading math problems (in between the two) to do it now but they still prepared me for the day when I would do Algebra.

We couldn't meet the requirements before Christ & we still can't. But Christ stands before us as a mediator between man & God. Say I beat up a kid & my parent is going to spank me. If that kid stands between my parent & me & says let my pain be all the punishment do you really think the parent would still spank the child? But how much good does it do for me if I don't know I've done something wrong? There's even a possibility I'll do it again. I can be told all my life hitting others is wrong but until it's explained & UNDERSTOOD why then I'm doing little more than going through the motions.

Quoting "that was before Christ" is a cop out for those who don't know why they believe what they do unless they explain why it matters afterwards. Jesus came to fulfill the requirements of the law, not abolish them. So unless they're just religious & not a true christian the whole Bible does matter.

The Old Testament was sort of a rudimentary training program for the rebellious Jews. They had followed Moses through the Red Sea and witnessed many mighty miracles yet immediately turned their backs in unbelief and worshipped the gold calf. It was sort of like a boot camp for juvenile delinquints. It contained a very harsh and strict law, as well as many prophetic types and shadows of Christ.

Once Christ came and died on the cross, all things were fulfilled and the old law was done away. The blood of Christ replaced animal sacrifices. Instead of unclean food or unclean foriegners, the cleanliness of the heart was taught. Christianity is a higher form of religion, so once it came there was no longer any need for the lower form... this does not mean the old form was bad, just no longer needed. Kind of like graduating grade school and moving on to higher learning.

Gal. 3: 24-25
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

There are many laws under the Law of Moses that carried over... adultery is still a sin, murder, homosexuality etc. Only the punishments changed, under the law of Christ a sinner has the CHANCE to repent while under the old law they were immediately stoned. A detailed study of both Old and New Testaments will help you understand which laws were done away, which carried over, and which were made even more strict (such as instead of just do not commit adultery, do not even lust after another).

Because most Christians thought the Old Testament is obsolete and superceded by the New Testament. Pity! The Old Testament is a treasure of wisdom, history and revelations concerning the works of God in relation to humanity, sin and salvation. Philip Yancey called the Old Testament as the "Bible that Jesus read." As a matter of fact the Old Testament is the only bible in existence during the time of the apostles and the first century Christians before they started collecting the letters and gospels written by the apostles.

I don't believe the Old Testament is "null and void." I just believe that as a Gentile, I was never under the Law, so I don't have to follow it now.

Believe me, this is something I've wondered about and prayed about for a LONG time.

The Old Testament contains a lot of wisdom. For example, the Proverbs. Also, I think one of the most romantic stories of all time is that of Ruth and Boaz. And the Psalms contain writings for all kinds of moods. It also contains prophecies (regarding our Messiah, along with many other things), and history.

We are under a New Covenant, yes, but that doesn't make the Old one any less valuable. History is important in any context.

It's the Whole Bible or none of It !
The Old Testament was Jesus Christ concealed.
New Testament Is Jesus Christ revealed...
You can't claim the old Testament promises without the rest of it.This Isn't "Buffet Christianity". Since we've been grafted Into the "Vine",we should Observe the whole Bible.

You are confused, my friend....True Christians use BOTH the old and new Testaments. The Old testament is a reflection and a "shadow" (if you can grasp that term) of the NEW testament! Every prophecy in the old testament pointed to the Messiah, Jesus, whose life and teachings are written for us in the New testament.....everything that the prophets and teachers in the old testament went through was eventually
guiding and pointing the world to the coming Messiah, Jesus. When you say "christians always say" "that was b4 Christ", you are missing what they are trying to explain....the difference between the law, which those living in the times of the Old testament had to abide by, and the NEW Covenant, which Jesus made possible by His death, burial, and resurrection, to give us a new covenant with Father God and eternal life, and the GRACE OF GOD that covers and forever puts our sin out of Father God's mind....we can be forgiven now, because Jesus took our punishment upon himself when He died for us on the cross. So....Christians learn and use both the new and old testaments and thank God for both, and the lessons we can learn from both. But thank God most of all for JESUS, who is alive and well and rules heaven and earth, and one day will take those who have given their lives to Him 100 percent to live forever with Him....out of this earthly realm, which man has managed to mess up and destroy with his own ideas of what is right and wrong, instead of following God's simple truths....in the OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS!!! May Jesus lead you as you search for peace and truth....keep digging into the Bible...you are headed in the right direction, for sure, if you are sincere!

God and Christ Jesus is both old and New. Romans 15:4 For by any skill issues were written aforetime were written for our studying, that we by using staying power and luxurious of the scriptures would have desire. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is functional for preparation, rebuking, correcting and preparation in righteousness, we favor old testomony to comprehend the hot testomony. Why not purely study the Bible. you may study plenty.

Well, perhaps you've been talking to the wrong Christians, but there is some truth to what they say about the "Old Covenant". There is a "New Covenant", and that's the covenant under Jesus the Christ.

So No matter what Law of Moses you bring up, even a few things that were before the Law of Moses, we are under the grace of God. So yes, it is different.

2 Timothy 3:16 says ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God, Jesus said Not one jot or tittli will pass from the law until all be fulfilled. jot and tittle are like dotting an i or crossing a t.
The complete Bible is the Word of God.
It is God breathed and inspired and christians are to listen read and heed all of it. Christians are under the New Covenant and the Mosiac Law does not apply to them but all else is in effect.

As a Jehovah's Witness and a follower of Jesus Christ i believe that the whole bible is inspired by God. 2nd Timothy 3;16 says 'ALL scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching....'. I dont understand why some christians would say what you said as Jesus regularly quoted from the Hebrew scriptures(old testament), showing that he himself believed that all of it was correct.
