Did'nt the oral surgeon give you post operative instructions? He or she should have. If not, please call and tell them you don't have any. Then send a family member over to pick it up for you! All oral surgeons or Dentists give patients instructions after tooth extractions. Until then, here's a short summery on the do's and don'ts. Do put an ice pack on you cheeks to reduce swelling. Ten minutes on, ten off, ten on, ten off. Do that every hour or so. Also, it's very important to take your pain medication on a regular basis, that way you stay ahead of the pain. Take it every four or six hours on time, according to instructions. Yes, it's painful but that's normal. If you start getting excruciating pain, though, that is not controlled by the medication, you need to let the Dentist know, ok? Also, it's important that you not loosen the clot that will form. You could get a dry socket if you dislodge it, then they'll have to put strips of medicated material in there to prevent infection and trust me, you won't like it. So, don't dislodge that clot by sucking on a straw, brushing over the clot with a tooth brush roughly, chewing gum, or drinking carbonated drinks. Eat a bland diet for a few days until it heals up some. Hope this helps!

Warm mild salt water rinses, like 1/4 teaspoon salt to a coffee mug of warm water, not HOT HOT though. They probably gave you tylonel 3 didn't they? Useless! Try Excedrin, honestly, it's better for dental pain. You can get over-the-counter ear pain drops too, called Similisian, orange and white box, bottle inside. I know you don't have an earache, BUT, when you put those drops into your ears, it eases that nerve deep inside that's connected to your back teeth, relieves ALOT of dental pain, just by putting those drops into your ears. I have nerve damage in many of my teeth, this all helps me. I'd rather be in labor than have dental pain! Another thing, sip chicken broth during the day, if your hungry, add a few crackers. Hot/cold packs applied, whichever feel better, to either the jaws, or you can even get relief by laying them on your neck. When mine hurt, I have to sleep sitting up because then I lay down, they throb harder. This all helps me with my dental pain, hope it does you too. It's no fun, toothache, or after extractions! Don't smoke! You'll get a dry socket and that is a MF!!!! Then they have to drill the opening back open and drain it, the infection gets trapped in there and turns thick and stringy, no fun!

Cool! I was fourteen. Surgery sucked, but I'm glad I got it over with early...anyway...here are some tips I found useful

- If it's still bleeding, buy some gauze to soak up the blood so you're not swallowing it

- If it hurts, take advil or something to relieve the pain. If you don't want to take anything, then I guess you're going to have to endure the pain.

- Make sure you ice your cheeks so they don't get swollen

- Gargle warm water and salt so your "open wounds" don't get infected.

A little too much information, but I hope it helps, good luck :)
If you want to know anything else, just add me or whatever :)

You need some post operative instructions... I know a great web site for you, but you have to navigate a little into it to find out about how to look after things, like using mouth soaks and just generally sensible care routines, and diets and such.
I don't know if I can help you, but here goes. To find out everything you need to know about orthognathic (jaw correction) surgery, wisdom teeth surgery, implant dentistry, TMJ problems and anything really to do with facial and jaw surgery generally, you should go to www.dentalimplantsaustralia.com. The site is an Australian one, and deals with oral and maxillofacial surgery, and also with dentistry and orthodontics. Good luck! I hope that helps you.

OKAY one....DONT PULL YOUR STITCHES OUT!!! I thought mine were pieces of food stuck back there, but it was the stitches and they all got infected and shoved 3 inch pieces of gauze in each hole with medicine on them to make them heal.

Don't smoke...they will also get infected, dont use a straw take the painkillers you got....you will need the pills, so conserve them if they didnt give you alot. My doc gave me 14 pills and had me take 1 every 3 hours, well I toke half of one with like 4 tylenols and it toke the pain away.

Drink milkshakes...best thing for you, just dont use a straw...they fill you up and make you feel full and the coldness on the holes make them feel soothed.

Good luck!! Its the worst surgery I ever went through!

Umm yea it hurts. Didnt they tell you anything or give you anything for the pain??? Eat only soft foods (yogurt, apple sause, soup). Dont eat anything with chunks of food in it before you are able to rinse your mouth cause the food will get stuck in the holes.

When your able to rinse get a syringe and blast each hole with warm water to get all the excess food and stuff out and to clean it. DONT get dry sockets they SUCK

if you dont have pain killers... that sucks take some ibprofin

goodluck

keep the holes free of food or anything else. i got a piece of rice in the hole where one of my wisdom teeth was a week after and it hurt like hell. had to take a half day off of work to go to the dr to fix it. otherwise just do what they told you to do take the pills they gave you and use the mouthwash as they said to. itll heal up quickly and youll be good as new in no time.

They should have given you a prescription of some sort for the pain. If they didn't, call the office and have them call one in. I don't like taking medication, but when I had my 4 out, I had to take the medication. Why suffer if you don't have to.

I agree with everyone else, but the main thing is to relax and get some rest. Also a warm washrag aroung your face helps. Good luck!

Make sure you're taking the pain medication your doctor prescribed. Also, it might help to get some of those cold pads that people put in lunchboxes. Those really helped me out.
