Surface Warfare Specialist "Pin". Is a qualification earned while serving on a ship.Submarines have thier own version of this called submarine specialist. (SS) There are 2 versions, an enlisted version(ESWS )and a officer version(SWO).
Their is also an aviation warfare specialist program (EAWS)
Each ship will establish thier own qualification program based on rules and guidlines set by the Navy. The types of qualifactions and tasks depends on the type and mission of the ship. i.e. a destroyer will have some different qualifications than a carrier. The entire qualification process is knowledge based. You must be completly familiar with all sysytems and duties of you particular ship. This will include things like, damage control, navigation, engineering systems, weapons system knowledge, basic deck and seamenship skills, sonar systems and any other area pertinent to the mission of the ship.Usuall you must vist Warefare qualified people in each department and learn the basics of thier jobs. When they are satisfied of your understanding, they will sign off on your qualification card or book. When you are totlaly signed off, you will take a lengthy written test. If you pass, you will attend an oral board consisting of one member of each department onthe ship. Normally the Command Master Chief attnds these boards. They will take turns asking you questions pertaining to thier department. It is usually about 5 question s from each department. When they are done, they send you out and talk about how you did. Thet may call you back and review your knowledge or, if you did well, congratulate you on becoming warfare qualified.
Additionally, once you are qualified, you must requalify when you transfer to a different type of ship but this usually just entails taking the written test with no oral board.
Also, ESWS qualifications give you points toward advancements!! Good Luck!!

"His courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy greatly contributed to their quality of life and helped create the most modern and highly trained fighting force in history," the honor said. It continued, "As Chairman of Subcommittee on Defense of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Murtha's tireless advocacy helped maintain the Navy and Marine Corps team at the highest levels of combat readiness to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

enlisted or Officer? Newly minted Officers must attain their SWO qual's within 2 years of reporting to their first ship. the Pubs are HUGE and there are tons of things that must get signed off on. you also have to attend a school in Rhode Island.
My husband( not a SWO) got his SWO pin during a six month deployment. SWO quals need to be done after your regular day to day job is completed.
Enlisted personnel do not have a time constraint, but it is generally agreed that if you don't have it by the time you leave your first ship( typically a 5 year tour) you are a dirtbag. The process is similar to SWO: Demonstrate a basic knowledge of EVERY working component of the ship, from engineering to the bridge.

wrong, you must be attached to a ship or at least be a detachment with the ship. while on board you must get the PQS's done for your Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) Common Core Manual. once both manuals are completely signed, you must set up to take a test and if you pass the test, you must then take and oral board. if you complete that, you will be awarded you Surface warfare pin.

You have to qualify at your rate while on board ship and serve on sea duty for a min of 2 consecutive years aboard the same ship. Your rate must be combat related for surface warfare. this means sea duty aboard something other than a carrier or a sub.
