"The greatest cause of atheism today is Christians that acknowledge Christ with their lips then turn and walk away."

Note: I am Christian and I agree with it. I do apologize that I do not know who to attribute it to.

edit-- I part of walking away from God to be how we treat others. This is a MAJOR part of how Jesus told us to conduct ourselves. "Love God & Love Others" that is supposed to be the Christian life.

Could someone post where in Manning's work it can be found?

i'm christian too, and i definitely agree with this quote! i have run into many people who claim to be christian, but live their lives in such an unholy way. i think it's a shame that there are people like that out there who are turning people away from god by their hypocritical actions.

"The greatest single cause of atheism today is Christians. Those who acknowledge Jesus with their lips then walk out the door and deny Him with their lifestyles is what an unbelieving world finds simply unbelievable." ~ Brennan Manning

I don't really agree with it. I think most atheism is based on lack of religious up-bring, too much religious up-bringing or a strong scientific foundation.

Jennifer Travis hit the nail on the head when she used this. But doesn't the entire quote read:
"The single greatest cause of atheism today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyles. That is what an unbelieving world finds unbelievable". Brennan Manning.

Edit. Just type His name into Your search engine and take it from there.

If you are a true Christian, keep adhering to your faith strongly, believe in Lord Jesus Christ, whose greatness has no known parallels, Christ who suffered tortures of the worst kind and then forgave his tormentors, is there any parallel to this great act of forgiveness. All the atheists are basically confused and have gone astray by not believing in a super power that has created them. Simply ignore such quotes that confuse you and have no tangible meaning. In today's world hypocricy is reining supreme and it is all the more important that you cling on to your Christian ideals with conviction and renewed faith and leave the rest to the great Lord Jesus Christ.

It's also used at the beginning of 'What if I stumble?' by DC Talk....cool song.
The atheists, in their own hypocrisy, can see the hypocrisy of the church, for it is a mirror to them. "Get the log out of your own eye first, then help your brother with the speck in his.'
And let's face it....the church has a major problem: they want the salvation, but to truly do so would mean THE LAW HASN'T CHANGED. But they reject the Law WHICH IS YAHSHUA. They want the 'cake and eat it too.'
We won't even get into those who are willing to walk His walk, sell all your things, give to the poor, and be removed from THIS WORLD. Most people today don't have the strength to do it...to DENY ONESELF.(And yes, I AM DOING IT, which is why I can speak about it).

I disagree 100% The greatest cause of atheism today is social acceptance of it, just like many other things that are ailing our country today. Christians seem to be ashamed to be called Christians for some reason. If that's the way you feel, don't waste God's time. Jesus already warned you about that when he said that if you are ashamed of Him, He will be ashamed of you on that great day of reckoning. There. Now no one has an excuse.

It's interesting but not the greatest cause, probably close, christian that say to live a "christian" life, but continue with a holier than thou attitude, along with a everyones going to hell view, such bigotry is protrayed and spread into the minds of liars and fakes.

Ummm No I think it should be re worded a bit something like

"The greatest cause of atheism today is the overwhelming lack of evidence for any gods or goddesses. Combined with flawed religious texts and the overwhelming discoveries in science. Not to mention any educated study on cultural evolution will show that hundreds of different cultures have idea's of what A god is or isnt.

I have seen so many unfaithful, weird.strange. hateful. Christians it makes me remember what Jesus said. that all that call on the name of the Lord will Not be saved. Only those who do my Fathers will. will make it to heaven. he said only a FEW will make it. we Must ask in fervent prayer that Gods holy spirit will be with us and guide us and direct our life's and listen to the spirits voice that will come in a very quiet voice and then do Gods will.many preachers will say all you have to do is believe that a Jesus lived.heck the devil knows that.
have You asked the holy spirit into your life?do you listen to that spirit within.? do you do Gods will?

I don't agree with it. Those who claim to be atheist blame Christians and believe they are enlightened. Blaming Christians is simply a way of annoying us - 'the insecure needs to find someone to whom they can feel superior.'
Atheists are atheist because they just don't get it or don't want to understand.
