He said we must err on the side of safety.... Essentially meaning if we're going to make a mistake, lets make a mistake leaning towards safety rather than danger.

We must err on the side of safety.

It means that we must always consider safety first, and if we make a mistake, make sure that it is done safely and no one gets hurt. Even if we do the wrong thing.

good luck.

The phrase is ERR on the side of safety.

It means that, even if what you do is an error, it's SAFE and you'd rather do the wrong thing and keep the situation safe rather than doing something unsafe.

I think he was actually saying 'ERR on the side of safety'. This means that it would be better to be cautious, rather than jump in feet first.
A simpler explanation of that quote would be 'Fools rush in, where Angels fear to tread'

im not sure how you would spell it but its err as in "we must err on the side of safety" basically saying if they were to make an "error" that its going to be by being too safe than not safe enough.

I have heard "to err on the side of caution", which means to be careful. (error on the cautious side not the other way around) but yours sounds kind of like the same thing.

Err on the side of caution is the correct phrase, which means be careful, nothing more.
