Well usually the inmate is locked up for 12-20 years before the execution so i'm wondering how the prison condition is

It depends on the state. There are lots of articles out there on correctional philosophies with regards to inmates on death row. The current philosophy seems to be to include them in general population in a maximum security prison -- which means some but very limited contact with other inmates, with each prisoner having their own cell.

prisoners sentenced to death usually go to death row until they are executed. They get yard time, but are segregated from the general population.

HAVING WORKED AT A MAXIMUM SECURITY BACK UP CAMP FOR DEATH ROW INMATES, I CAN SAY:
1) NO THEY DO NOT GET TO BE LET OUT WITH GENERAL POPULATION INMATES.
2) BEST SHOW OR MOVIE OF DEATH ROW PORTRAYAL WAS "DEAD MAN WALKING".
3) THEY STAY IN THEIR CELLS 23/7 AND HAVE ONE HOUR A DAY IF THEY CHOOSE TO COME OUT AND EXERCISE (THEIR RIGHT-TO WALK OR NOT) TWO OFFICERS PER INMATE ON WALK YARD--THEY HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO JUMP CUFFS AND GO AFTER ANOTHER INMATE THEY DISLIKE OR HAVE A GRUDGE AGAINST.
4) THEY ARE IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT--WHY--BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE. IF THEY KILLED A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER OR ANOTHER INMATE. THEY ARE ALREADY ON DEATH ROW? THEIR ATTITUDE SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO KILL ME AGAIN?
5) BECAUSE OF THE APPEALS PROCESS MOST ARE ON DEATH ROW FROM 2-25 YEARS.(DEPENDING ON CASE AND SEVERITY OF CRIME (S) COMMITTED.
6) BECAUSE OF THE CHANGES IN THE DEATH PENALTY LAWS--MANY WHO WERE ON DEATH ROW IN 1973 WERE COMMUTED TO LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE--3,287 IN THE US WERE COMMUTED BECAUSE OF[ FURMAN V GEORGIA 408 US 238 (1972).]
7) BECAUSE OF THE DEBATE OF LETHAL INJECTION SOME MORE IF NOT MOST OF DEATH ROW WILL BE COMMUTED TO LIFE WITHOUT OR WILL HAVE A LONGER STAY OF EXECUTION BECAUSE OF MORE RAMIFICATIONS WITH APPEALS.
