Is modesty an attractive characteristic in a man?

I am a modest guy. I was raised to be humble and I find modesty to be a good thing. But I've also noticed women seem to never go for this kind of guy (as if being modest means you have no self-esteem). They always go after the overly-confident, cocky guys.

So ladies, if you were aware the guy you were with was modest (for example, will downplay a compliment, and never seek reward for his kindness), would you find that attractive, or would you want a guy who's assertive side is more visible?

you are right on all accounts...girls usually do like the cocky, in your face, i'm so great, kind of guys. But, in a long term relationship, we generally hope he subdues his virtues in front of others.
I think the best think you can do at the moment is show off by just doing everything really well...show everyone how great you are through your actions--don't talk the talk, just walk the walk...thats REALLY sexy, since you have SO much confidence then that you don't even have to verbally prepare anyone for the greatness thats about to come, you know what i mean...and then you'll go from "the silent guy" to "the mysterious hot guy"...since most women interprit power, control and ability VERY positively, like you're a real man who can handle a women like themselves without having to use a cocky pick-up line!

Depending on each woman's taste in men, I can understand how some women could even feel intimidated by a modest man.
However, I think modesty is a great characteristic in a man. Modesty shows that you have good morals/values, and your completely aware of how you're perceived by others. Any woman or man who accuses you of having a low self esteem for being modest, are simply showing their lack of knowledge about you.

********* and over-confidence may pull/lure women in, but it definately won't keep the person there.
If you ask me, there are not enough humble people left in this world. I was raised to be humble as well (but I"m a girl). And its a quality I truly recognize and cherish in others.
Learn to accept compliments, because sometimes modesty can be confused with insecurity. Just make sure you' believe in yourself, and are confident, but all the while humble and you'll meet the right girl.
********* is often a facade and once you get to really know the person you learn that they are filled with way too many insecurities... girls end up learning that the hard way

I am an EXTREMELY modest person, so of course, I go for equally modest guys. =)

Every woman is different. The shallow ones are usually after the pretty boys or the rich guys, but a deeper woman looks for someone who has a meaningful and sensitive personality.

For me, the sweet, shy guys are the ones that really make my heart beat faster.
I tend to ignore the cocky ones that hit on me.

both. def need a guy who is confident but not a stupid bone head who thinks he makes the earth go around. that deserves an eye roll. but maybe better accept compliments cause those are def a think to be confident about when complimented! but dont go too far, keep doing what you're doing. -show confidence -take compliments with pride - its good that you dont seek reward for kindness... but sometimes do.

I like modest men. I think cocky=insecure (just trying too hard to hide it) But everyone has different taste.
