Like what?
And how would anyone know that unless they have been to hell themselves. If something was truly done to be a good intention wouldn't it stay that way until the end?

It's a commonly used metaphor that means that evil is usually done by people intending to do do. A lot of the time it is spoken hell is not so much intended as a place of torture for evil people (or unbelievers who aren't evil) but as something we want to avoid (hell on Earth is quite possible).

When one considers that most of the bad things that people do are done not because they want to do evil but because they wanted to do good but were mistaken it is a very good warning to heed.

I must comment on the answer made by Michelle.
Does that mean that a person that does believe can be a horrible person and still go to a place called heaven?
That's not fair.
The most amazing person I know is an Agnostic, and if there was any such place as heaven, he would deserve to go there.

It's an old proverb. It means you have the best intentions but, things still end up turning out for the worse.

good intentions don't get you into heave, Christ does..so if you're a "good person," but don't believe in Christ, you'll only go to heaven if Mormonism turns out to be true (pretty much everyone gets into heaven unless they turn from the church or kill someone...so don't kill anyone and don't join the church-that way you never turn from it.) Thus, you can be as "good" as you want, but the Bible says we're all sinful and we all deserve hell....so in a nutshell: no matter how many good intentions you have, you can still end up in hell.

I dunno. Something my old man would tell me when I would say stuff like: "In a minute!!!" when he wanted me to go vacuum the car out. (I tend to "forget" to do things. Oops, my bad.)

edit: It means that you might have an intention to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, but if you never do it, you don't get the grace. I mean, if your brother is in need and you SAY you're going to help him, but you don't help him, what good is that?

scriptural reference?
That parable about the father who asked two of his sons to do something for him. The first son said "yes" but did not do it. The second son said "no" but did it. Who do you think the Father loves more?
