Salt has an action called crenation.. it uses the osmosis principle to dry up the bacteria. But having swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, indicates you have a pretty good infection in play. If you don't respond to the salt gargle (several times a day) you best think of getting some medical help and start a program of anti-biotic treatment. Make sure you watch the tongue and make sure it doesn't start looking like a strawberry..This would indicate a strep infection going systemic.. That you don't want. The toxins from strep can be very damaging to internal organs.. particularly the heart valves.

when you get sick your throat is your body's first line of defense for infection. -gargling salt water for sore throats kills the bacteria thats infecting your throat and even temporarily relieving it. however, advil and salt water can only take you so far and seeing as how your current status is -i'd see the doctor right a way because your baby is at risk of catching whatever you may have. if any cases where you must be near her, please practice good hand hygiene -by washing your hands before you touch her or her things (and after too) and covering your mouth if in any case you sneeze and/or cough.
if your looking for other ways to relieve your sore throat: hot tea w/ lemon, throat lozenges (halls, etc.) may help also.

Your mother has advised very correctly.
You might have excess cough, that will go away with gargles and slowly you will recover.
To recover fast you do one thing, avoid eating as already you have lost your hunger.
Go on drinking lukewarm water as per needs.
If you feel hunger enjoy roasted/ boiled/ steamed beans or pulses + green salads and vegis.
Avoid all fats till cough disappears.
Fever is due to cough.
Fear is the worst sickness, you will fall down again with it. So pl give up all sorts of fears and worries, you will defeat Mr. death!
