Wild dogs use their nails to hold prey, dig, and grip when they chase prey. This way, they get worn down naturally, unlike our couch potato puppies.

I see you don't have a working dog or herding dog...

My three dogs are working and herding... and they run around the farm and wear their nails down enough that I NEVER have to clip their main nails. I only have to clip the nails on the dew claws.

The same holds true for wild dog, wolves, coyotes, etc. etc.
They run rough terrain regularly and it wears their nails down just fine.

No... cats trim their nails on tree trunks ... not dogs.

Wild dogs/wolves travel miles and miles everyday to find food in their territory...this naturally wears down their nails.

Domestic dogs do not get this type of exercise so their nails need to be clipped on a regular basis.

Wolves and other wild canine are much more active that their domestic canine conterpart. They actively forage and hunt mostly in rather rugged invironments (imagine your dog lying on the couch and just walking to the food and water bowls). They naturally ware down their nails.

To help keep your dog's nails shorter you can try walking more with it. Sometimes more excersice will produce the same effect.

your dog just needs alot more exersice like a 1 mile hike in the woods every chance you get or a walk down the street twice a day. think of how much you walk ea ch day and then the dog needs that to. and walking on concrete helps to. it makes the nails shorter but make sure the dog gets on some grass too.

they are worn down from running you will find that dogs that are kept outside very seldom need there nails cut.
I think dogs should be more house pets and if you have to cut your dogs nails that often I cana pretty much tell your dog is kept inside

someone already mentioned their claws get worn out from the activity they do, but also keep in mind that those dogs and wolves probably come accross more claw-related problems then our well-manicured pets do :)

They dig dens, they scratch up the ground, they climb over logs.. They do more than sit on the couch, and play in the grass..

I'm so jealous that your dog gets his nails clipped sitting on a beautiful girl's lap, once in every two weeks. :( can you please cut my nails too?

They don't, that's why they attack other animals and are called "Wild".

Yeah what the guy above said...
