Ok so I have a basset hound who is about 4 years old now, I used to have a golden lab who was really smart and knew how to come/stay an avoid getting killed an could find his way back home.
My lab never did anythin stupid like eat grass or like put his nose in other dogs poop, go crazy when other dogs are around or run away into traffic.
My basset almost died several times hes run through an electric fence/w a collar on and gotten lost several times an was just sniffing around
He eats plants that aren't edible and tugs an pulls in the opposite direction we need to go does not know how to come or stay, doesn't eat when food is put out till hours later, he just doesn't remind me of my lab at all who was much more I dunno how to say this but a smart dog.
What can I do to make him smarter an is it true that bassets are really the dumbest dogs plz help

Your Basset isn't stupid, he is a normal Basset that is a very scent driven breed. He also is just not properly trained, which is YOUR fault, not the dog's.
You can't make a dumb dog smarter, but you can make a dumb person smarter and teach them how to train their dog. Get yourself and your dog in a training class.

You don't give any idea how long you have had this dog, did some one else influence the first 4 years of his life?
Eating grass and sniffing things are both things that dogs just do, unless as babys the natural instinct to do so was modified.
Your Bassett must have been terrified to go thru an electric fence, he probably was not properly trained prior to the experience to know how to react to the fence and collar to him the pain or noise, came out of no where and he was getting the H*** out of "Dodge" not running away.
He sounds like he and his owner need to get together and go to school together. Comparing a Lab to a Bassett is like comparing apples to oranges neither is better they are just really different. I doubt any Basset owner or breeder would agree that they are dumb...... this dog could just be a mis match for you, could have been with out supervision and training long enough to not know he has a Boss.

i'm sure you already know that every dog is different. as long as you keep expecting this one to be a clone of your last one, you will have problems. a couple of things: it's ok for dogs to eat grass, they eat it when they have indigestion, it is normal. second thing, if your dog doesn't come when it's time to eat, you need to up the stakes: put the food out at the same time every day, give him 15 minutes, 30 minutes tops to come and get it. if he doesn't, put it away. he will eventually get the idea that he needs to eat when it's time, or he won't eat at all. simple. and it works. your dog just needs training. it doesn't mean he is stupid.

Dogs eat grass because their stomach is upset. It makes them vomit so they feel better.
Your dog is not stupid, you have to train him. Take him to obedience classes so he can learn basic obedience.
Also, rip up any plants that the dog is allergic to- they shouldn't be in your yard in the first place. Also, get a real fence because those invisible fences never work.

First of all bassett hounds are a very independent, very stubborn, and very smart. if you had done any research on the breed at all you would know this. Second of all just cause your stupid doesn't mean your dog is.

My dogs eat grass,too,and according to my vet,some dogs eat grass simply because they like it.Mine sure do and I've never seen them throw up after eating it.Pass it,yes,throw it up,no.
