Your scalp is dry. I get this from time to time especially in the winter or after I've been out in the sun.

Invest in some good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I regularly use the whole Garnier Fructise Sleek and Shine system including the leave in conditioners and I haven't had a problem since. When you put in conditioner, make sure to massage it into your scalp. It may tingle because your head is irritated, but at least is moisturizing and washing the flakes away. Leave itin for a couple minutes, I leave it in while I shave, and wash it out with warm water, then cold for maybe 10 seconds for shine (it seals the cuticle). Always use conditioner after the shampoo or it defeats the purpose.

I don't like the dandruff shampoos because of all the unecessary chemicals that are added in. Your scalp is just like your hands;
if you don't keep them moisturized and healthy in the winter, they'll chap, flake, and itch.

EDIT:
It depends on your hair thickness and if you style your hair by straightening, blowdrying, etc. I have normal thickness hair but lots of it (aka a full head of hair) and I flat iron it every day. I use conditioner and leave in conditioner after my showers, and it still isn't enough. I have to do deep conditioning sessions, too.

If you have thin hair, too much will way it down, But you have to do some trial and error before you get it right. Just beware of the cheaper brands, because they contain chemicals and who knows what that you dont need. Herbal Esscence and Suave made my hair fall out in gobs.

Also, I use toner and facewash with salicylic acid in it to help control what pimples I do have to prevent future ones. salicylic acid dries out skin. I use it to help stop the oil production on my face because I'm only 14.

Why are you listening to a freshman anyways? Probably because I've been through more hair products than any one person in a lifetime. Trust me.

Dandruff is one of the major disorders of the scalp.Poor hygiene, improper diet ,sluggish condition of the scalp caused by poor blood circulation are the main causes of dandruff. A herbal rinse is a safe method of removing dandruff. Apply lemon juice with the rind on the scalp .After 5 minutes wash off with shampoo and water. I've tried many types of dandruff shampoo (head and shoulders, selsun blue, etc. ) and the only one that really works is called "Nizoral". you can find it at walmart and in the supermarket. it's better smelling than the other ones too. Nizoral contains a kind of fungicide. Did you know that most forms of dandruff are caused by overgrowth of a fungi that lives on your scalp?

Use a shampoo w/ salicylic acid like Neutrogena T/Sal Shampoo. For product information: http://neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails_65.asp?lProductLineID=14

After drying your hair, massage your scalp w/ a drop of 100% jojoba oil to sooth & moisturize your scalp. Jojoba oil is non-comedogenic & washes out easily so it won't build up on your hair. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods & natural food stores carry it.

Wash your combs & brushes at least once a week to get rid of hair styling product build up.

Avoid gels & hair sprays until you get this under control.

DONT I REPEAT DONT
USE BABY OIL

it takes FOREVER TO WASHOUT

unless you love greasy looking hair

talk to a doctor

be careful with moisterizer conditioners most are only for the ends of your hair and will give you a case of greasy hair!

again go to a doctor

try wearing a head band or bandanna or something if your worried

also head and shoulders tend to only work when you use it then when you stop dandruf comes back and gets worse

i've had the same problem. i used dandruff control but what was really going on was that i needed to brush my hair more. your scalp needs circulation and exfoliation just like the rest of your skin, but your hair kind of traps it up there. brush your hair more, especially on the top to exfoliate it.

also try not to use too much conditioner.

Most likely you have a dry scalp. You can solve this problem by washing your hair less often. If you are currently washing once a day, try washing every other day and it should help.
