That is a thought provoking question. In practice, he was a carpenter, this would be a business owner today. That would make him a capitalist. However, the Church that He set up in Acts had all things common. This would be socialist. One big difference is that the Church was not the Government. To be a true socialist, you would desire for the Government to distribute the wealth. He was homeless at His birth, because of taxes.
He separated the Government from Church, "Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and unto God that which is God's."
I could see how He would be for socialism in Church and capitalism in the Government.

Socialism is the idea that until everybody is satisfied with what one earns, no one is entitled to keep all the result of his work and productivity. With socialism, by law and by force, others who, for whatever reason, did not earn enough have a claim on the earnings produced by those who have produced their wealth. Socialism is a form of legalized theft where some are entitled to what others have earned.

Jesus advocated these principles, if not by compelling people to give up their earnings by law, by instilling a great sense of guilt in those who dared to be too productive, become rich and not give away part of their wealth.

Biblically, he was neither. He was an anti-progressive. Of course, they're just stories, so who knows what the real Jesus was like - if he existed at all?
