OK my cat is a domestic longhair tortie. I got her from a shelter around christmas last year. She is about 4 or 5 years old, she is healthy besides having runny eyes from upper resperatory problems from being in a shelter her whole life.

I was petting her today and found a mole on her back close to her tail. I rubbed it to see if it hurt her and she started opening and closing her mouth and licking her lips and her back shivered. I stopped rubbing it and she stopped. Then I rubbed it again and she did the mouth and back things again.

The mole is skin color and is small about the size of half a pea. It doesnt show any signs of hurting her and doesnt interfere with brushing. Any ideas of whats up?

the licking and shivering were because you were touching a very sensitive part of her body, mole or no mole. if this is the first time you have noticed it on her, is it possible it has been there all along? do you know for sure it is a new thing?

anyway, it could be just a mole or a sore. if you know for sure it wasn't there before, then you should consider calling the place you adopted her from and seeing if they can help you diagnose it.

I agree with Christy 100%. More then likely it is nothing. My cats have always had funny reactions when you rub the part on their back directly between the tail and the hips (one even used to druel!) I wouldn't worry too much but maybe have the mole looked at. Cats don't get skin cancer the way people do.

Cats can get a sort of spasmodic grooming reaction and tremors from stimulation on the back, especially if there is a sore, scab, mole, or even just a hair mat. I would have the vet look at it, but it probably isn't anything dangerous.

hmm...i have had 4 cats....one of them had something like that...except it was a sore from its mother picking it up by the scruff on its neck...it went away soon...i would take it to the nearest vet....they'd prolly have a good idea of what's going on....hope it's not a bad problem ;)
