i'm looking for information for a memorial of my grandfather who was a marine in world war II...the easy thing would be to ask the question from my family, but i'm wanting to keep what i'm doing a surprise...so...
i know that he was in the 3rd division and everything i've looked through and can remember him talking about says
3-K-9...does anyone know what the three letters/numbers stand for? obviously the 3 is the division and i'm guessing the K is the company?
any help is very appreciated!

It stands for Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment which was part of the 3rd Marine Division. I served with 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment as a Navy Corpsman, so I'm familiar with that outfit. You might also want to check out the web site in the source below. It gives a timeline history of the 3rd Marine Division in world War Two, including the battalion your grandfather served with.

The link is to the 3rd Marine Division Assoc. I suggest going to the source for good answers. 3/k/9 in Army terms would be 3rd Co. /K Battalion/9th Regiment. That does not make sense. Good luck.
Edit: Did a little more looking and found 3rd Bn/ 9th Marine Regiment. It did exist in WWII. Maybe the Marines ID BN/Co/Regiment. So 3rd Bn/ Kilo Co/9th Marines is a good hit, was part of the 3rd Marine Division and at Bougainville.

The only tactic the Dem's that support this socialized medicine and government abuse of power, as by our constitution, is to demonize their critics. Non have said what this bill will actually do, and none are willing to admit that human nature will have an adverse effect on the demands of what this bill will provide. Give something away, and you will be a fool for not taking it. Thus the demise of any private insurance that even attempts to compete with a government program. No this isn't written in the bill which gives the manipulative Dem's their talking points. But it by no means, means it won't happen. Our America Thrives on individualism and entrepreneurial-ism Socializing health care and overt control over our freedoms will kill the American dream, which is the most productive and rewarding dream in the world.

3rd Division, K Platoon, 9th Battalion
If not, sorry, I'm more knowledgable about the Army, Air Force and Navy than the Marines, but I think their abbreviations should be about the same as the Army.

"K" stands for Kilo...... And if your Grandfather where here today I would give him a firm handshake and a thank you for all he has done, for if it weren't for those men on those Islands, we would not have the freedom we have today.
To the jerk who called him a dog, I am very appalled by his lack of respect for your Grandfather, the MARINES, and you.
