I am not talking about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
John 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

No, a person cannot be a Christian and not have the Holy Spirit in them.

When Jesus was still on earth, before dying on the cross, the Holy Spirit was "with" the disciples. (John 14:17) When Jesus met them after the resurrection, and breathed on them and said, "Receive ye the Holy Ghost," the Holy Spirit entered into them. From then on, when anyone receives Christ as Savior and Lord (aka getting saved or becoming a Christian), the Holy Spirit comes into them and their spirit becomes joined to Him. (I Corinthians 6:17) That person becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit. (I Corinthians 3:16, 17; I Corinthians 6: 19, 20).

Someone mentioned Romans 8:9 - this verse makes it clear that if someone doesn't have the Holy Spirit indwelling them, the person is not His. One of the things the Holy Spirit does is assure us that we are God's children, as seen in Romans 8:15, 16 and Galatians 4:6.

good question, there are actually two different gifts of the spirit that people ( and me) can get confused on.
The Gift of the holy Ghost is not the same as being baptized in the spirit, I have experienced both.
and dont confuse the SPirit of sorcery with the spirit of the HOLY Ghost, either! being drunk with spirits is an old time cliche but the same thing happens with sorcery and pharmecuticals.
When the spirit of the Holy Ghost comes into a persons INSIDE, there is a peace from above, and the Peace that comes from the earth is not the same thing but many are deceived by it. Rev 18:23,24.
Yes a person can be a christian but to be saved he must be born again. including spirit and water. to be a believer in christ one does not always have the gift of the holy ghost and the same Holy Ghost can come and go, in fact demon possession applies decietful practices to the same kind of experience.

The role of the Holy Spirit is to testify of truth to you as well as guide you through your life in the paths of righteousness. We feel "his" influence most when we live in a Christ-like manner. And we drive away the Spirit when we act contrary to that.

Since every Christian sins (yet hopefully repents), all Christians at some time in their life (and more likely on many, many occasions) distance themselves from the Holy Spirit. Yet that does not "negate" their Christianity.

In other words, you're still a Christian even though your actions have pushed away the Spirit, providing you right the wrongs. And we owe that Christ's atonement, his sacrifice of himself for all mankind.

Romans 8:9; You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
So the answer is No.

If the Holy Spirit is not real, then all Christians are Christians in spite of the fact that they don't have the Holy Spirit in them.

to be a Christian you have to have asked Jesus Christ into your heart, to be your lord and savior, and to believe that he is the way the truth and the light, and that he was truly perfect and died on the cross to cleanse you of your sins.

If you do not have the holy spirit then how can you be a Christian?

I believe it is something you have to search for. We are saved by the cross, but the power is not in us. The disciples were breathed into by the holy spirit. 6 yrs ago, my head was lifted off my pillow, and the holy spirit breathed into me, and said I AM here. Trembled me from head to toe as he spoke. He just gave that to me, but I have been searching for him for a long time.
