I'm not asking to be stupid. I just wonder what it's like.

My mother was paranoid schizophrenic and single when I was growing up. It was a nightmare for her and for us 3 girls. I was the oldest and pretty much took care of her since I was 10. She was non-functional without her medication and since she was also an alcoholic, that really messed her up. She had no contact with reality most of the time. She had no concept of time, would cook dinner at 6:00 and then wake us kids up at 2:00am with another dinner made and make us eat it. Her voices told her to do crazy things, thought the cars going by the house were talking about her, got violent in a restaurant once when she thought she was reading the minds of everyone around her, "judging her"....it was horrible. She had 3 suicide attempts and finally completed her suicide in 1988 when I was 31. Not to be mean, but it was a relief for all of us.

I am a schizophrenic. The disorder is at first terrifying and debilitating but if one receives immediate TLC and medication it improves. One has to have the will to get better which requires that you know and admit there is something abnormal about you. Delusions I think are the explanations one comes up with, based on their limited knowledge, for what is happening to you. One should suspect all explanations one makes as even medical professionals who have seen many patients do not know what causes the disorder.

Other than the above it has not been so different from a normal person for me. If you want further insight go to my profile and read my questions and answers about schizophrenia and other matters or e-mail me for further discussion.

Good luck, good health, peace and love!

My mother is also schizophrenic. She is unmedicated and untreated. I can tell you what it's like for: it's like i'm living with the walking dead. it's the closest a person can get to having a mom who is here, technically, but not here mentally. She thinks our neighbors speak to her. there is a police radio in our house that bothers her at night, she's constantly yelling at voices in her head to shut up, she thinks she is a witch, and a lot of other dellusions.
Growing up with a crazy mother has been for lack of better words..crazy. I stopped trying to understand her because there is no reasoning with a crazy person. She has been untreated for 30 years and I wonder if she will end up like the above poster's mother and kill herself. She doesn't seem like the type to take this out on herself (very angry, hostile, outwardly person) but she is also really tortured by all her dellusions.

I work with a developementally disabled young woman who is schizophrenic (and psychotic and ocd) It is terrible. She hears voices in her head, and gets confused whether or not they are real. She also sees things (hallucinations). Sometimes the voices/ hallucinations are so ludicrous that I almost think she is making them up. Sadly, she isn't.
