There a statistical probability that if a relative has it one of the offspring might get it, but generally NO, it's not.
It is more likely that there are behavioral patterns that parents impose on their children, and then the children impose on their children, which is passed down. Sort of like "the sins of the father shall be visited upon the son."
You can go to any library and look up schizophrenia in the "DSM" - ask for the latest version; 4-R or later. If the librarian doesn't know what a DSM is, tell her the "Diagnostic Statistical Manual for Psychiatric Disorders".

Can schizophrenia be inherited?
Scientists have long known that schizophrenia runs in families. It occurs in 1 percent of the general population but is seen in 10 percent of people with a first-degree relative (a parent, brother, or sister) with the disorder. People who have second-degree relatives (aunts, uncles, grandparents, or cousins) with the disease also develop schizophrenia more often than the general population. The identical twin of a person with schizophrenia is most at risk, with a 40 to 65 percent chance of developing the disorder.
THERE'S MORE ABOUT IT ON GOOGLE.

I am a schizophrenic. I have studied this problem quite a bit. There are some who believe there is a genetic predisposition for the disorder but it takes many genes working in concert. I, personally think there is no definitive evidence it is genetic in nature. If you want more info on the subject just type "schizophrenia" into Yahoo! web search. A number of informative links comes up. Wikipedia has a good summary.
Good luck, good mental health, peace and love!

Yes, it's inherited. Usually from Mother to Daughter but it can be passed to a son also.
Don't know where you'd find it on the web, but it has been known in my family for a couple of generations now (a grandmother and an aunt) and this is what we've been told by their psychiatrist.
It can also skip generations, like any genetic trait.

From an actual psychiatrist, yes there is a strong correlation between certain types of schizophrenia and occurrences within families. See the DSM 4 revised edition for information of the biological etiology of schizophrenia as well as a definition and list of identifying characteristics of schizophrenia

Well, it's influenced by heredity and environmental influences. So, yes, you can inherit the tendency towards schizophrenia, but the environment also affects whether you will develop it or not. Here's some info:

my mother is schizophrenic and I have asked my therapist, read many books, and taken psychology classes.
If you have one parent who is schizophrenic, you have a 10% chance of inheriting it. The chances increase and decrease if the relative with schizophrenia is 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree. 1st degree would be your parents or siblings, for example, second degree would be grandparents, nieces, ect.
However shizophrenia is not something you only get from your genes.

I am most certainly not an expert but I did not think it was inherited but had heard anecdotal evidence that it does sometimes tend to run in families...
Someone else will know for sure.

Chinese believe that schizophrenia is present in all of us. When a person is in very low depression or state of mind another spirit takes over the mind and dictates its actions. This usually happens when the host is unable to deal with a problem and resigns itself and lets another spirit to take over.
