Shalom is also used as a greeting and parting without the aleichem.

The traditional Arabic and Hebrew responses to being greeted with the ( Hebrew )Shalom Aleichem and ( Arabic ) assalam aleikum are to reverse them..Aleichem Shalom or Waleikum salaam or something like that ( my transliteration may not be precise)

So for the English translations the greeting and parting exchange would go " Peace be unto you" and the response " Unto you be peace"

Mizrahi Jews from Arabic lands would be equally at home saying either the Arabic or the Hebrew. Perhaps a Mizrahi Jewish person may see and respond, I'm a hillbilly Arkie Jewish mama :) I just put my southern U.S. spin on it and say

Shalom y'all ! :D

I believe it's "assalam aleikum," though the pronunciation varies between dialects. The difference is that one is Hebrew, the other is Arabic. The Hebrew equivalent is actually "shalom aleichem," which sounds similar and has the same meaning.

In Arabic, "salaam" means peace, though "Islam," that derrives from the same linguistic root, is translated as "submission" (i.e. submission to G-d's will).

In Hebrew, "shalom" means peace, and derives from a root meaning "completion" ("shaleim" and "shleimah" mean full, or complete). The idea in Juaism is that peace is a state of completion - not merely an absence of violence, but the presence of harmony between various parts.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Both come from the middle east, so there are going to be similarities in linguistics. As- salaamu alaikum- peace be unto you.

Shalom in its entirety means:
Completeness, wholeness, soundness, health,
peace, safety, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony and the absence of discord.
It is a complete perfect and whole blessing to whom it is given.
It does not mean just peace or hello or goodbye.
i do not know the meaning of assalam walecum.
Shalom

pretty much the same thing... peace be upon you

and to the person above, we Muslims don't claim that Jews are going to hell. The Qur'an quotes God as saying, and I will paraphrase, that only the righteous among the people of the book (muslims, christians and jews) will enter heaven. That means we don't claim to go to heaven just coz we call ourselves Muslims. We will all be judged by our deeds, faith, intentions and what we contribute to this world that will ensure us a better life in the next one.

Muslims say, "As-salam alaikum."

Jews say, "Shalom aleichem."

They mean basically the same thing: Peace be upon you.
