Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert sunlight (light energy) into sugars (potential chemical energy), and at the same time release oxygen (because a water molecule is split to yield a hydroxyl molecule as an electron acceptor).
Respiration is the process by which most organisms convert food (potential chemical energy) to actual metabolic energy (the stuff that makes you alive, as opposed to explode). Respiration needs oxygen for reacting with the food molecules, and a byproduct is carbon dioxide (CO2).

So: Photosynthesis converts light to an energy storage molecule. Respiration releases the energy stored in said molecule in a controlled reaction to fuel the body's life processes.
