Christians, why is pornography so bad? I'd like a reason too, not just a "cuz it is"

Anything that might give too much pleasure tends to be frowned upon. And erotica is pleasure.

No it's the work of the yearning of the loins.
Wait. I'm not a Christian I shouldn't be answering this, but I will any way.
Archetypally I think it is illustrated best by the tarot card: The Devil. The card has a picture of a large bull-type demon hovering over a nude couple, their ankles chained to his wrists. I think it's symbolic that if you live your intimate life solely for the pleasure of your genitals that in a way you are being controlled by a primal urge and it is important to find more in a partnership that just sex... a companion or if you are in a poly amorous relationship should be prosperous in other ways such as friendship accompanied by hot sex in the bed room.
I think of the poor guys spending every night locked in their room yanking off to porn when they could be finding companionship, porn is great but in small doses, don't become chained to it and make it prevent human interaction.
It's a loss of romanticism, porn doesn't give us butterflies in our stomachs like staring deep into someone's eyes and appreciaitng the curves of their lips... that's a bad analogy but do you get what I am saying?

It sure isn't the Work of the Lord. Some doctors claim that pornography can spark an addiction that is far more difficult to overcome than drug addiction. Treatment for drug addicts usually starts with detoxification to remove the substance from the body. But addiction to pornography, explains Dr. Mary Anne Layden of the University of Pennsylvania, “produces mental imagery which is permanently implanted in the mind of the user and is scaled in by brain chemistry.” That is why individuals can vividly recall pornographic images from years past. She concludes: “This is the first addictive substance for which there is no hope for detoxification.”

Deception is creative!
It corrupts your mind, and makes you precieve that which is not altogether real. Pornography elevates sex to an unhealthy level and makes you believe that having multiple partners is OK, but in reality having a relationship that is based on love and respect is much more satisfying in and out of the bedroom.

Pornography entices men to want to have sex with women whom they are not in a committed relationship with. It objectifies women, so men see them as more of a means for physical release and not as people with souls worth nurturing, lessens men's respect for relationships, as it makes women easily available while otherwise you would have to be married to have access to nude women, it ruins marriages (Honey, how come you don't look as good as this woman? Why won;t YOU do X, Y, or Z for me?) and it can feed dangerous desires for men (or women) who can't get enough...like it can lead to child pornography, or other degrading and dangerous actions. Pornography makes women feel like they cannot compete physically with women in pornographic magazines, and makes women feel badly about themselves, hurting their self esteem. This is just the iceburg. The world would be a better place without that crap.

Okay, I will try to be brief...

Everyone knows the story of Adam and Eve - but not everyone gives it much thought past, "She gave him the apple, they ate it, they were doomed". The story of Adam and Eve is paralleled over and over again in this way:

We are given a choice between something perfectly adequate to sustain us, and "more" or "different". Our downfall is when we choose more or different... (I suppose you have to weigh the intentions of wanting more, etc...).

My belief is that in life, we are to be satisfied with what we are given at birth: food, family, and shelter. If any of these are not present, we are to make them present by any means necessary - but since they were given to us supernaturally, I think we are supposed to seek wholeness supernaturally (by relying on God to fill the void).

Please keep reading, I'm almost done :-p

Christ was placed in the wilderness for 5 weeks... and tested. He was deprived of everything, and tempted to have more than He needed - the devil put it all in front of Him, and He said "NO". This is the example of how we are supposed to live - accept what we have, be grateful, and acknowledge that the extras are WORLDLY pleasures - not of God, but of the devil. Even if God allowed things like porn to be invented, pornography is a corruption of something natural that was made to be shared in an intimate relationship and for making babies. The choice to make it, watch it, perform in it, etc, is the choice to have more or different... and to be discontent with what we were given at birth....it throws us on a path AWAY from God (away from God = closer to the devil?).

Pornography is a corruption... a way to satisfy the flesh that we use for filling a void. It is the work of the devil.

It sex for sex's sake, which makes Jesus cry, apparently.

The only kind of sexual activity that isn't offensive to the Christian God is that which takes place between a husband and wife, in the missionary position, in the dark, for the express purpose of producing Christian offspring, and preferably without any wallowing in the merely physical pleasure of intercourse.

By the way, "pornography" comes from the Greek pornographos meaning "writing of prostitutes." It doesn't mean "bad sex," except insofar as sex with prostitutes is probably never that great.

I'm not Christian (I'm Buddhist) and I have NO expectation that people aren't going to look etc. It only gets damaging when you, the real lover, is being replaced by the screen. This has happened to me twice and I'm not a bad lover by any means.
I think it just takes over for some people, not all. When someone is having to hide hundreds of files under hidden folders and spends hours a day going at it with a screen then it is harmful.

It depends on what is being called pornography. That can be interpreted differently by everyone. However pornigraphy is bad because it takes what is natural and beautiful and distorts it into a simple act of rutting. It puts us on a level that animals live on and that is not what our intelligence should allow for...we should be above those we consider to have less control and mental capacities, otherwise we should simply return to the wild ourselves and live as animals.

Pornography displays human life in a trashy manner. It reduces God's gift of sex to a common, meaningless event. It destroys families and relationships. It give people a warped view of reality in thinking that human life is nothing but whatever makes you feel good.

I don't have a link but I will search for one for you. Anyway, there have been scientific studies that prove that pornography actually changes the way the brain works.

I'll be back with a link in a minute.
