Try and make some friends. Hang out and have a good time. Also, you can talk to your friends/family back home often.

Are you in my classes? I just started grad school, too. I grew up in the US, but I have worked with some professors who did not and what they have told me is it really just takes time to adjust. It may take longer for you than for others because you are foreign. I suggest speaking with some foreign professors in your program who earned their degree in the US and asking for advice. They will understand exactly what you are going through and should be happy to help. If there are some international students in your program try talking to them about how you are feeling, too.

Here's my story:
The first time I left my family for school was for undergrad. I was homesick for the entire first year. It was awful--I wanted to go home all the time. I was too far away, though. So, I didn't go home and now, 5 years later, I am totally fine. My body and mind just needed to adjust to being somewhere new and out on my own, and now that it has I am much stronger for it.

I am sorry you are having problems. You might be experiencing simple homesickness, but if this has been lasting more than a couple of weeks I suspect that you might be developing a more serious mental health problem. I think it would be good to have yourself evaluated by a psychologist or psychiatrist. It's not unusual for mental health issues to come out when a person is in a new situation. I wish you good health.

Please don't take any chances with your mental health. I suggest you see a school counselor right away and discuss your feelings. You might also let your parents know how you're feeling. You aren't doing yourself any favors by letting yourself hurt, and you aren't really accomplishing what you came for anyway. If things don't get better after talking with a counselor, I would just consider going back home and studying there. It's not worth being miserable. Good luck.

Hang in there..I'd guarantee it half of all college students feel this at some point. I know I'm having a hard time...just hang in there and keep your eye on the prize!

Write down the stuff you should do, then write down the stuff you are doing to avoid that stuff. Ask yourself why you are avoiding it? My dad always said the hardest part of studying is opening the book. Just study once, see how you feel.
