I bought cat food from Petco and it was expired!! im very concerned because my kiten is 4 months old and hes very sensitive because hes a pure breed. i checked his litter and his poop was thin =-( called the coperate office of petco-filed a complain--called petco--they said its not a big deal--we check all the food on the shlef that mustve been the only one expired (where as at the time when i went to buy it that was the only bag remaining, i called the same day--couple of hours later) so according to them it came like that from the company--called the company, they were quite apologetic whereas they shouldnt have been because it wasnt there fault. .i wanna take my cat to the vet and i wanna make petco pay. is that possible? and should i worry about all this???

I wouldn't worry about the expired food -- your cat probably cannot get sick from that. I eat expired food sometimes and I don't get sick. I think you should ask Petco to replace the bag with a non-expired bag of the same food.

I have been told that food, both human and pet, is good for about twice as long as the expiration date indicates. In fact some "expiration" dates actually say "best if used before -----" which is probably more accurate.

I eat food past its expiration date fairly often, even fresh foods such as milk and yogurt, without ill effects.

I work at a vet hospital, and all of us employees feed our personal pets food that is past its expiration date (thus we won't sell it) but not returnable to the manufacturer because the container is damaged.

I'm sure PetCo will give you a fresh bag or can or case of the food if you take the expired stuff back, but I don't think your cat
will have any bad effect from having eaten it.

I'm just curious but if you knew that the food was expired, why did you feed it to your cat anyway? You can't make petco pay because it was an oversight on your part. You could have just taken it back to the store, and exchanged it for a new bag because it was expired, or not even purchased the bag because it was expired.

Hey
There is no way that these stores can catch everything, but they are very caring owners, & would probably had been glad to give you another bag; Expired food doesn't mean that it is bad, all the time; it just means that it's older than what the Gov stamps on it. Unless your cat stays bad, after a couple days, I really don't think you have anything to worry about. If your neighbors cat came in your house & ate some cat food & got sick, would you want the owner to go after you?

Back in the good old days, cats ate expired tuna, expired mice, and expired birds all the time. I would not be at all concerned about a kitty eating what is marked as expired on today's foods. We have such high standards anyway. I believe she will be okay and make a big deal out of it and making Petco "pay" isn't a good idea. As long as your baby kitty is all right, then please let this go and love your kitty instead.

Just chill a little before you make your cat have diarrhea because you are freaking out.
Your cat will be fine. Take the bag of food back to Petco with the reciept and get a new bag of food.

Expired pet food shouldn't hurt your cat at all.It may lose some of it's nutrional value, but it really won't hurt them.
