I'm in my first semester of college and it's been my plan all along to do ROTC so I can become an officer when I graduate. I know this might sound dumb, but tonight I watched United 93 and it just got me so angry that i'm not sure I can wait any longer to serve. I'm considering enlisting in the Navy when the semester is over. Any advice on what I should do?

The Military will always be here, but your chance at a good college education may not always be. Unless your in a combat unit in the Navy, its not like you will be seeing any action or getting revenge. You don't have to join the military to serve our country. There are other ways, for instance, the kids going to school will get jobs that will serve the people of our country. Like doctors, teachers, managers of stores or businesses. However, If you feel the military is your calling, think about it and do it. I am hoping to join the military. I just have to wait until November.

I am currently active-duty officer, i understand you angst and frustration at the situation in the world. My advice is to ask yourself "What can I offer the country, i will be sworn to protect later rather than now?". If you want to join the Navy now because you want to get in the fight in the Seals or Special operations. You are still at least 9-18 months away from combat. Iraq is not going away in the next 3-4 years( For all those who think so, you really do not have a clue). If you think you can be more valuable by waiting and leading sailors to defeat our enemys, then I would wait. Either way you will go to combat my friend sooner or later.

I appreciate your conviction and I wish that your love for your country resonated with more people. All I can say is go to the recruiter's and tell him your plans. Being an Officer is a WAY BETTER career choice that going enlisted, so if you can, make sure that you get that degree and go that route. Maybe join in the reserves if you just can't wait? Go to basics over the summer when school is out? There are many options available, I am sure! Good luck, God bless you and your service and career.

It sounds like you have had a good plan for quite some time. You would have a better career and more options as an officer with an education. Later in life you will appreciate the education and the experience that comes with it. I have family and friends who have served both ways and they are all proud of their service, but having seen their experiences those who have had education first have had a better outcome. We need a diverse force with a varied skill set, you are not doing a disservice by finishing school first. Whatever you decide, you deserve support and gratitude for your service.

Son...I can appreciate the fact you want to enlist. I did when I was your age and I have never, EVER regretted it. It wouldnt hurt you to finish some school before you go, it will help you get a better rating in the navy, but if you decide to go now, good for you.

I respect people that care enough about our country to enlist. Its a sign of pride in our country. Be safe and do your job well. Remember, in the military its a huge team, and every person MUST do their job to the best of their ability.

Stay strong and be well!

i was actually in a similar situation as you. a freshman in college, wondering if i should finish school in ROTC or enlist in the army (navy? if you're angry, why navy...). i dropped out and joined the army. i don't regret enlisting, but i wish i finished my semester first. college hours count for a lot in the military, and down the road.

Do yourself, your country and the Navy a favor....

Finish college. We need good people in the service, and no knock to enlisted people like myself (9 years), but quality leadership is something that is most important in the Navy.

You will regret it later if you stop school and enlist now.

g-day!

having been enlisted first and now an officer, i say WAIT and finish school.... yo will be good no matter WHERE you are and what rank you are if your heart is right.... so why not make alittle more and get a better pension and have more control over what happens?

On the other hand... i am VERY worried over someone who is swayed professionally and emotionally over a docudrama......

Stick with ROTC man, it is a 100% gaurantee that you will regret dropping out. We need more leaders, don't be enlisted. The pay is crap and besides don't you want to get school out of the way? I am a sophomore in college and I am roughing it out until I can get to OCS. But what you do is up to you, you want to join, no one can stop you.

If you want to make a career out of the military, finish ROTC first. The military isn't going anywhere Rambo.
