You're right.
The only people who insist that Judaism is only a race are not Jews and wish they were.

The name Jew came from Judah; He was a son of Jacob.
Judah was given the Scepter, through his line would come Kings until Shiloh come(Jesus Christ). To be a Jew, you have to have come from the line of Judah, his line are the only Jews. David, and Jesus was of that line.
Jews are Israelites, but all Israelites are not Jews. Being Jewish is not a religion or nationality, its just the people of the linage of Judah.
Religion. is the worship of God.
Jewish is not the religion, Judaism is the Religion. We get this, all mixed up, The roots of a Jew has to lead back to Judah, or hes just a descendant of an Israeli.

You're whatever you put your faith in (Islamic, Christian, Jewish). The majority of Israel is Jewish and therefor is a Jewish country. But of course there are thoses who follow Christianity and Islam. Just because you were born in the US doesn't necessarily mean you're a descendant of Israel. Do your Biblical history, Israel is a descendant of Jacob. Noah had three sons, all of which had children. Abraham came from Shem I think.
Abraham > Isaac > Jacob > 12 Tribes of Israel
With all of these people, starting from Noah's three sons, having children, you could be a descendant of (many possibilities).

You could be born in Israel and be a Palestinian, neither a Jew nor considered to be Israeli.
To be an Israeli, you would have been born in Israel.
To be a Palestinian, you would have been born in Israel
(since there is no recognized nation called Palestine)
To be a Jew, you can be Jewish by religion, or descended from a religious Jew.

Not only is the "public" confused about who is Jewish, and whether it is a religion or a nationality, those who proclaim they are "Jews" are also confused.
Are you "Jewish" because your parents consider themselves "Jews"? Biblically, "Judism" was only passed through the mother, as in many American Indian tribes, tribal ancestry was only gained through the mother.
I was "brought up" in a Methodist family, converted to Catholicism. If I chose tomorrow to convert to Judaism, I would be a "Jew".

The answer to your question is historical in nature. In the past religion played so much role that it used to be the basis of distinguishing or identifying people ,but now nationalities or citizenship play a bigger role .You know the change is not sharp like black and white but more of a spectrum i.e gradual change...."CAN ANYGOOD THING COME OUT OF NAZARETH?"'..,..".SALVATION IS OF THE JEWS|"These are two statements used in the past in different contexts, but it proofs what i have just said. Now adays we talk about your country in terms of identification.are you american or british?.are you israeli or egyptian? All israelis are not jews but most jews originated from israel.also all americans are not christians but most christians are in america.

I always found it funny that in the Bible a man can have two sons. The two sons have a falling out and then one becomes the other ones slave.
One son is Jewish and now the other is not.
Funny how that works isn't it.
