my husband will be coming home on t.p.n. he has crohn's diease. people ask if it's a feeding tube an i tell them yes. am i telling them the correct answer?

no, it is not the same thing. tpn stands for total parenteral nutrition, this means he will be recieving nutrients thru an IV line, an intravenous line directly into his blood stream. A feeding tube either goes down the throat into the stomach or is surgically inserted through the abdominal wall into the stomach.

A feeding tube is a tube that runs through the nose and down into the digestive tract or a peg tube that is inserted through the abdomen and liquid food runs into it. The digestive system still processes the food. With TPN the digestive system does not process the food--the nutrients go directly into the bloodstream.
